New York Power Authority Temporary Co-Op Research & Technology Development (Power Systems) in White Plains, New York
The research & technology development department at NYPA is responsible for development of innovative techniques for operation and maintenance of NYPA generation and transmission system.
The research & technology development Co-op student will help R&D department in projects related to monitoring and control of NYPA’s system.
Goals/objectives the Co-Op should achieve by working on this project:
Establish familiarity with sensor data including PMU measurements available at NYPA
Utilize synchrophasor data with state estimation technology that provides solution and expanded visibility
Enable assessment of the system steady state under real-time conditions
Develop real time contingency analysis to provide operators with actionable intelligence on contingencies, voltage stability margins, phase angle limits
The existing monitoring data and models needs to be analyzed and developed for real time studies and integration of sensor data including phasor measurement data (PMU) for EMS applications. The Co-op student will then assist the R&D supervisor with wide area monitoring and predictive modeling using sensor data to characterize steady state conditions in real-time and under contingencies. The Co-op student you will help to discover the hidden information in vast amounts of data, and help make smart decisions in control room application and monitoring of NYPA assets. R&D department at NYPA is working on several projects including NYSERDA and DOE funded projects to use sensor data including SCADA and PMU data for wide area monitoring, alarming and control.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Understand power systems, stability and reliability, mathematics and statistics
Proficient experience with Mat Lab, PSS/E and Data driven software
Knowledge of data modeling, data integration, and data management preferred
You consider yourself an expert in either in power systems or data science including predictive modeling and analysis, predictive algorithm development, machine learning algorithms, and data visualization solutions.
Must be able to work well in a team environment, have good communication skills and open to new ideas.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Graduate degree preferably in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems), Computer Science, Information Sciences (e.g., Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Sciences, Informatics) or other related field.
Pursing a PhD student in Power Systems or Computer Science, preferably at least 3 years into PhD
