Summary

The Senior Vice President, Strategy and Corporate Development will drive NYPA’s overall strategy, build an internal strategic consulting function, and lead corporate development efforts. Taking an objective, collaborative, and hypothesis-driven approach to solving problems and facilitating decision-making for senior leaders this person will provide strategic thought leadership to the organization and Board of Trustees.

Responsibilities include designing and executing NYPA’s strategic planning process, and establishing an internal consulting service to guide the delivery of high priority strategic projects across the organization. This position will also focus on leading corporate development efforts, leveraging business intelligence to make considered, data-driven and strategic decisions to grow and structure its business, establish strategic partnerships and achieve organizational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Participate as a member of the Executive Management Committee in establishing and implementing long-range strategic plans and initiatives.

  • Facilitate the collaborative creation of long-term strategic plans and ensure that shorter-term business planning supports and integrates with long-term objectives.

  • Identify and facilitate coordinated responses to emerging electric utility industry opportunities and challenges.

  • Manage the evaluation of potential development projects or ventures, acquisitions, new business models, product / service offerings, and divestitures.

  • Serve as the strategic “thought leader” to position the Authority to sustain and improve its competitive position.

  • Interface with high-level leaders in the electric utility industry, regulatory community, and state and local governments to advance NYPA’s position.

  • Build internal management consulting capacity within the organization to provide guidanace and management to organization wide consulting engagements (non-engineering).

  • Lead, manage, and develop a high performing team committed to the strategy.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven results in hands-on leadership with the capacity to mentor and develop others.

  • Familiarity with the electric utility industry and associated technologies, regulations, trends and issues.

  • Ability to discern industry trends early and quickly conceptualize creative responses.

  • Ability to research, develop and implement programs.

  • Must be positive, energetic, and able to motivate and build a strong team.

  • Proven ability to think strategically, as well as tactically and creatively.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, relationship building and stakeholder management (e.g. tact/diplomacy, persuasion, cooperation, negotiation).

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills including ability to resolve disputes and observe confidentiality.

  • Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to distill complex information into simple and meaningful insights & conclusions (and bring everyone along to drive alignment & action).

  • Ability to manage human, financial, and information resources strategically and to build an effective team.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • A Master’s degree in business, public policy or related field preferred

  • 10 years of experience with planning and corporate development or other similar strategic planning experience

  • Experience leading and managing a team

  • Experience in management consulting or internal strategic planning

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 10% travel primarily within NY State
