New York Power Authority Environmental Justice Program Coordinator in White Plains, New York

Summary

The Environmental Justice Program Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and communicating NYPA programs in support of environmental justice (EJ). Through contacts and initiatives identified by NYPA, the incumbent will interact with NYPA EJ stakeholders in communities surrounding NYPA facilities and projects in the Downstate region (including but not limited to The Mid-Hudson, NYC and Long Island), and in the Upstate region (including but not limited to Western NY, Central NY, Capital Region and Northern NY).

The incumbent will be part of an existing team of EJ coordinators who are responsible for raising awareness of NYPA’s programs and initiatives by building and maintaining relationships with elected and governmental officials, civic leaders, community and public opinion makers, business executives and special interest groups in those communities which have Power Authority facilities and/or energy efficiency projects. This EJ coordinator is primarily responsible for building and delivering Energy related STEM curriculum to K-12 and college aged students including training community educators. The incumbent will be an experienced educator familiar with STEM education policy and will be responsible for the management and procurement of internal and external education providers and ensuring that curriculum is aligned with NYC, NYS and National Science Standards. Travel to all NYS regions to implement NYPA programs and to represent NYPA at community events is required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement energy efficiency and educational programs within Environmental Justice communities, schools, state and city organizations consistent with NYPA’s mission, and goals.

  • Track, monitor and influence government actions that impact NYPA’s business plan and policies via direct involvement at the local level.

  • Research and report to Manager on issues pertaining to Environmental Justice communities.

  • Actively research opportunities for NYPA representation in targeted local, regional &/or professional organizations to enhance NYPA’s profile.

  • Research and report on the field of energy and the environment including but not limited to energy efficiency, energy services, transmission, electric vehicles, climate change, renewable generation & the clean energy marketplace.

  • Recognize opportunities to leverage NYPA’s community resources to further company goals.

  • Prepare written reports & presentations for management.

  • Ability to interact directly and independently with all levels of management both internally & externally as well as with government officials.

  • High degree of motivation, with the ability to handle competing priorities, while demonstrating a high level of attention to detail.

  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.

  • Understanding of the changing regulatory environment in which NYPA operates (Preferred).

  • Ability to undertake significant travel, weekend and evening work to coincide with community events and workshops.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor degree in English, Public Administration, Environmental Studies or related field.

  • Masters degree in Public Administration or related field (Preferred).

  • Minimum 2 years of business experience.

  • Understanding of electrical industry (Preferred).

  • Experience in a community outreach or account management position (Preferred).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Bilingual written and spoken English/Spanish (Preferred for Downstate incumbent).

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 50% travel within NY State.

  • Ability and willingness to attend meetings/events outside of normal business hours.
