New York Power Authority Director Mechanical Engineering in White Plains, New York
The Director Mechanical Systems Engineering oversees and coordinates mechanical systems engineering-related projects and activities in collaboration with the Hydropower and other Engineering groups, and other departments and the sites, to produce high quality engineering solutions on schedule, within budget and in accordance with stakeholder requirements.
Lead and manage a centralized engineering team responsible for the engineering of upgrades and major maintenance of mechanical systems at NYPA’s power projects, transmission and support facilities, including approval of engineering designs, calculations and specifications.
Responsible for the development and maintenance of design and construction standards applicable to NYPA’s mechanical systems in coordination with the Mechanical Apparatus Committee.
Lead Engineering support for VISION 2030 Projects to maintain NYPA’s position in hydropower and renewable generation projects, develop transmission, and new technology to support integration of renewable generation sources.
Perform engineering analyses related to mechanical systems, fire protection, generation assets and high energy piping systems.
Oversee engineering consultants in preparation of design, specifications, inspections and evaluations of NYPA’s power projects, transmission and support facilities.
Develop equipment and construction specifications and associated calculations.
Work closely with other engineering and design staff to develop solutions and responses to customer needs.
Support compliance with FERC dam safety and other standards, NERC and NPCC reliability standards, and NYISO requirements.
Promote a culture of safety and develop designs with proper engineering controls for transmission work.
Manage staff including performance reviews, salary administration, succession planning and resource balancing, and identify and recommend solutions to adapt staff to meet changing NYPA needs.
Develop staff expertise to ensure succession planning and critical core competencies are maintained within NYPA.
Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, site personnel, project management, project development & licensing, emergency management, regulatory agencies, external stakeholders and other business units.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering related design standards, advanced modeling practices and techniques.
Thorough understanding of IEC, ASME and other codes, standards, regulations and construction processes within the utility industry.
Subject matter expertise in mechanical engineering.
Thorough understanding of NYPA’s maintenance and construction practices.
Strong project collaboration and effective communication skills.
Strong leadership ability and technical background to develop staff and maintain a highly skilled workforce.
Broad knowledge of NYPA's mission, policies and procedures and the interaction and responsibilities of the various NYPA business units.
Ability to produce clear and concise reports, presentations and other documentation.
Ability to apply technical and theoretical knowledge to data and observations, to generate complete solutions using accepted standards.
Strong platform skills and ability to tailor presentation to the technical understanding of any audience.
Ability to respond and adapt to emergent and changing priorities including NYPA, DPS Article VII and NYISO.
Capable of building teams and fostering teamwork amongst management and bargaining unit personnel; strong collaborative and negotiation skills to influence senior management, peers, outside policy makers and other NYPA personnel.
Proficient in ANSYS, Solidworks, Microsoft Office, SAP, Maximo, Mosaic and other platforms as required.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Civil engineering.
Advanced degree is preferred.
Technical expertise, typically acquired with a minimum of 12 years applicable experience.
Licensed Professional Engineer in NYS.
Knowledge of industry codes and standards.
Knowledge of federal, state and local regulations.
Experience in the design of mechanical systems including steam, condensate, feedwater systems, fuel systems, high energy piping, instrument air, cooling and fire protection systems.
Experience in the design and operation of steam and natural gas generation systems experience in life cycle and failure analysis and material selection and processing.
Ability to access all areas of the plant, right of way and transmission facilities including ability to climb and work at high elevations and in confined spaces; ability to walk a significant distance, sometimes on uneven ground.
Approximately 25% travel, primarily within NY State.
