Brief Posting Description

Tri-State is a power utility providing electricity to rural electric cooperatives. We have an Engineering Intern vacancy available for the 2020 summer in our Substation Civil Engineering group. Engineering students who have successfully completed two (2) to three (3) years of undergraduate study towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, but a strong Electrical or Mechanical Engineering candidate could be successful, from an accredited college or university engineering program are encouraged to apply. Engineering seniors who will be graduating in December or are planning to attend graduate school in the Fall are also encouraged to apply.

This summer position offers an engineering student hands on opportunities to assist with standardization across all physical substation designs, and provide consistency for the maintenance crews.

Job Requirements


  • Integrate new updates and standards to family of structures (adjust phase spacing and bus height across all voltage classes).

  • Add additional deadend structures to the library (structures vary with and without switches, LA's, and similar devices).

  • Add additional structural calculations across all structures and voltage classes.

  • Participate in field design process, review the equipment, and witness construction.

  • May participate in adding 3D CAD structures to the library and process documentation.

  • Responsibilities may include a study on actual project costs vs. estimated cost project-if time allows.

  • Expected Outcomes. Gain knowledge and experience with Tri-State's Substation design standards, various related structures, structural calculations, in the field review of substation facilities design process, construction activities, and design process documentation.


Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work well with a variety of people; strong verbal and written communications skills; strong organizational skills; strong work ethic and willingness to learn.

  • Strong experience and ability with Microsoft Xcel, and/or writing "AutoCAD lisp routines" is desirable.

  • Knowledge and experience writing general computer code is a bonus.


  • The duration of this summer position will be from about the end of May until the end of August (flexible depending on the student's start/end of semester). The work schedule is Monday through Friday, forty hours/week.


  • Tri-State offers a competitive pay rate for this position. The position is based at Tri-State's Headquarters at 1100 W. 116th Avenue, Westminster, CO 80234.
