Job Purpose

In order to create a more responsive and optimized electric grid that will meet our customers’ growing expectations while continuing to deliver clean energy in an efficient, safe and reliable fashion, National Grid has embarked on a grid modernization (GridMod) initiative that will implement new business and technology capabilities and platforms. A key component of the Grid Modernization effort is delivery of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), to deliver significant customer benefits including Real-time meter reading enabling analytics to better manage network burden and encourage energy efficient behaviors through Time-Varying Rates (TVR), VDER rates, Critical Peak Period (CPP) rates, and load management programs.

The AMI Program Manager, working closely with their business counterpart, will be accountable for managing and delivering the IT scope of the AMI program, including any integration and management of dependencies to several other transformational programs underway at National Grid. The scope delivered must meet near term goals, while creating a platform for future growth and a solution that allows an agile, continuous improvement approach to future development.

Key Accountabilities

Build strong relationships with, and gain the trust of, the AMI business leads by demonstrating a clear understanding of the AMI business objectives and larger implications of the AMI role in supporting overall Grid Modernization efforts.

• Working with the business leads, validate the overall AMI strategy/approach, making necessary adjustments in business and technology direction/plans to maximize the desired business outcomes.

• Prepare business cases in collaboration with both IT and the business ensuring that benefits are clearly articulated, and that finances and regulatory implications are properly documented.

• Working with the AMI business lead, drive and oversee the development and ongoing maintenance of IT project plans ensuring they support tracking of deliverables, milestones, and interdependencies with other Grid Mod efforts, and other major initiatives such as CXT and CIS.

• Lead the IT development, testing, implementation and post-implementation phases of the AMI program leveraging the IT Delivery teams and selected system integrators.

• Develop and maintain the AMI roadmap in support of the future initiatives and ensure alignment to the enterprise application and technology IT roadmaps.

• Direct the IT Technical Project Managers responsible for the AMI program tracks/work streams and ensure that proper IT staffing is in place across all of the IT concentration areas as necessary – Solution Deliver, Infrastructure & Operations, Physical and Cyber Security, Enterprise Architecture, Data Management, Procurement, and Finance.

• Responsible for all IT finance and regulatory tracking and reporting associated with the AMI program.

• Implement scope and risk management process for AMI program collaborating with the business and appropriate IT functions.

• Interact with senior executives and prepare reports/briefings to address executives’ informational needs.

• Coordinate as necessary with internal (e.g., Customer, Electric, Regulatory, IT, HR…) and external (e.g. consultants, business partners, vendors) project stakeholders.

• Ensure that proper governance processes are in place to ensure adequate technical and financial controls and compliance.

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with ability to influence without authority

  • Concise written and oral communication skills in working with customers and senior management across organizational lines.

  • Has the ability to influence and manage senior stakeholders – e.g. program sponsors.

  • Demonstrate the Valued Business Partner capabilities and behaviours in all interactions with IS Colleagues, vendors and business stakeholders.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field

  • 10+ years in progressive leadership roles and significant experience in leading portfolios of multiple programs.

  • Proven track record of delivering large scale ($50M+), complex business and technology solutions in an organization undergoing significant transformation.

  • Ability to work well within matrix organizations in delivering major change in an organization.

  • Familiarity with industry best practice solutions (agile delivery, SOA, risk issue management, etc…)

  • Ability to develop highly functional teams as an inspiring leader who leads by example, builds integrity within the team and champions a strong commitment to National Grid’s values and vision.

  • Experience with organizational change/transformation.

  • Can display experience of starting and finishing with the customer in mind, with a strong accountability for delivering on commitments, while possessing the ability to navigate quickly through complexity.
