Job Purpose

National Grid Digital (ngDigital) is building a global team of remarkable entrepreneurs, designers, engineers, architects, product experts and business strategists to create ventures that deliver strategic value for National Grid.

In addition to our digital products, we are talent incubators, building and disseminating digital capabilities and culture within National Grid.

Reporting to the VP of Digital Execution the Head of Performance will drive the performance of digital teams through:

  1. Directing and coordinating the IT organisation (and wider National Grid) to deliver the services and support required for digital

  2. Assisting in the IT to DT transition of current IT services to ensure they are fit for Digital

  3. Monitoring and improving the performance of the Digital team through value-adding metrics and improvement interventions

  4. Responsible for the budgetary aspect of digital including annual budget planning, representing digital at regulatory submissions and actual vs forecast metrics.

  5. Ensuring that each team and team member within Digital is growing, developing and performing at maximum capability and new team members come up to speed quickly.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manages the budgeting cycles for all Digital Activities. This includes working with stakeholders to develop the multi-year budgets, liaising with the regional CIOs to ensure Digital’s needs are represented at the regional annual budgeting cycle, and ensuring that Digital is managing in-year budgets within forecast.

  • Gains support for Digital funding from regulators. This includes ensuring investments for Digital are understood and supported by regulators (in both the UK and US) by preparing compelling material for regulatory meetings, refining the Digital messaging to align with the key regulation value streams, and presenting the digital case to regulators at face to face and remote meetings.

  • Working with the regional CEOs and CIOs to develop and report relevant regional Digital KPIs. These will be used at QBR meetings, monthly KPI reports, and in the US will form part of the APP measure

  • Agree Digital execution plans with IT Business Partners, Regional CIOs and Business Leaders. This includes agreeing sequencing of digital ventures with other IT and business and business activities.

  • Secures the support from the other IT service teams to ensure Digital plans are understood and supported. This includes securing both the key people and other resources (eg environments and software). Act as a point of escalation to IT leaders when required.

  • Works with the leaders of the IT service lines, and the Digital Head of Engineering to drive the IT to DT transformation to ensure the IT provides services fit for Digital.

  • Prepares draft management reports and presentations for: internal update presentations for CIOs and CEOs, Executive committee papers, and Regulatory submissions.

  • Supports the Digital Sprint teams in achieving IT approvals, including ARB, Sanctioning, Stage Gates.

  • Ensures new starters (30 expected in next 6 months) are successfully embedded into the team quickly with responsibilities clearly agreed, robust induction plans in place with ongoing support.

  • Creates and tracks performance metrics for the Digital teams. Uses the metrics to communicate and improve the performance making improvement interventions when necessary

  • Create career matrixes for the new skills sets (eg UX, Product) and work with Digital managers to ensure that all staff have ambitious development plans and are tracking to them.

  • Ensure that objectives are levelled across the digital team and performance is accurately and fairly measured.

  • Bachelor's degreee strongly preferred. Master's degree considerd to be a big plus.

  • A thorough understanding of National Grid, its IT processes and an interest in Digital transformation, Information Technology and a passion for delivering results.

  • Strong financial literacy, very comfortable with the financials of the company. Understanding of rate cases and RIIO processes in US and UK, respectively.

  • Strong networking and influencing skills, demonstrated through a track record in current or previous roles. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • A track record of delivery and performance, with evidence of cutting through organisational bureaucracy, delivering results fast – a self-starter, confident andindependent, ability to work to tight deadlines in a high pace environment.
