New Jersey Natural Gas, a subsidiary of New Jersey Resources is seeking a System Planning Engineer to develop and maintain pipeline system hydraulic models using steady state flow simulation techniques to analyze and recommend additional facilities and upgrades required to ensure the proper, cost effective design, evaluation and operation of the company’s natural gas infrastructure.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Utilize computer modeling and data analysis tools to aid in the evaluation, justification, and development of solutions to gas system issues and/or opportunities

  • Analyze and model annual peak day system operational data to best simulate system flow and pressure characteristics needed to accurately forecast various scenarios due to proposed system changes, scheduled shutdowns, and emergency conditions

  • Continually maintain and update the hydraulic network models for all transmission and distribution systems; liaison with GIS staff to ensure the timely and accurate maintenance of system models

  • Assist in the development of various degree day (DD) models for annual system planning studies, including contingency studies, based on Marketing’s annual load growth forecast and Gas Supply’s portfolio projections

  • Apply systems and processes knowledge to assist the project engineers in decision making, potential project development, and adequate system design

  • Evaluate the effects of proposed large volume commercial and industrial customers, and developments may have on the transmission and distribution systems, and recommend necessary reinforcements to assure adequate system capacity and pressure

  • Assist in the design of the installation or replacement of the company’s system pressure monitoring points for SCADA, in collaboration with Gas Control

  • Maintain locations and data related to the company’s system pressure monitoring points in the GIS

  • Design detailed meter sets for large volume commercial and industrial customers

  • Prepare and manage work orders for the development and engineering design of new gas pipeline and regulator station facilities in conformance with federal, state, local, and company codes, procedures, and standards

  • Prepare labor and material cost estimates for work orders

  • Prepare construction drawings for proposed and completed changes in the distribution system

  • Prepare and obtain all necessary voucher checks, permits and prepare work order and drawings for each installation

  • Coordinate a pre-construction meeting with contractor, Division Supervisor, PM&T, and Gas Control for scheduling and planning the project progression

  • Inspect potential job sites to evaluate field conditions and the possible effect they may have on system design

Position Specifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college is required, preferably mechanical or civil

  • Some experience in Steady State Gas Analysis including work with Synergi Gas or equivalent gas Hydraulic Modeling software is preferred

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS preferred

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and negotiation skills

  • Must be detail-oriented and flexible to handle multiple assignments and deadlines

  • Some experience in Steady State Gas Analysis including work with Synergi Gas or equivalent gas Hydraulic Modeling Software preferred
