Managing the global offshore wind business from Glasgow, ScottishPower Renewables is responsible for progressing onshore wind and marine energy projects in the UK and offshore windfarms throughout the world, managing the development, construction and operation of all projects.

Securing our position at the forefront of the renewable energy industry, ScottishPower Renewables now has 30 operational windfarm sites producing over 1,600 MW, including West of Duddon Sands, our first offshore windfarm project.

With a further 500 MW of onshore windfarm projects due to be constructed, we are set to maintain our position as the UK's leading wind developer. With our 350 MW Wikinger Offshore Windfarm in the German Baltic Sea due to be constructed in 2017 and our East Anglia ONE Windfarm, which has full planning consent and a contract that will allow us to develop up to 714 MW, we are set to position Iberdrola as the world's leading offshore wind developer.

The position belongs to the Optimization Team, within the Operations and Development Engineering Department of the Global Services team, and focuses on providing engineering support to all Iberdrola Renewables Business Units (Iberia, International, UK & Offshore) except US BU (Avangrid), mainly with regards to the operational issuesof the assets.

The individual will act as a Wind Turbine Technical Expert within a team of engineers responsible for the resolution of complex technical issues affecting the global generation fleet (>14,000MW) and will help deliver technical

expertise and provide mechanical engineering advice to the business assisting the Head of the Mechanical team in the management of technical problems and solutions.

The position will also imply responsibility to ensure clear communication of the technical operational experience gained and lessons learned to the Global Operations Regions, particularly in the UK and Offshore, where the individual will fulfil the role of the Business Unit’s Representative for mechanical topics. The individual will be responsible for developing and maintaining an effective relationship between the UK and Offshore Operations Business and Global Services

Description

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Proactively lead the development and implementation of appropriate solutions for mechanically orientated technical issues impacting generation output, to improve the production efficiency and minimize the technical risk of reduced production.

  • Establish and maintain role as Global Wind Turbine Life Extension Projects Expert within Iberdrola, proactively lead all these projects and provide engineering support to develop and implant them in Iberdrola’s Global Portfolio to ensure knowledge remains in-house and reduce reliance on external parties to provide technical support in this field.

  • Carry on the analysis and surveillance of the fleet monitored with vibrations to release technical recommendations to all BUs. Diagnose drive train condition using CMS in UK fleet. Also be involved in the integration of the different systems used and under development new solutions to monitor fleet in I&I; BU. The individual will be involved, as well, in the development of new fault detection algorithms for other WTG components using existing or new vibration monitoring systems.

  • Lead root cause investigations for WTG component failures and the development of solutions, on behalf of the Global Services & Operations teams, along with Wind Turbine Manufacturers to ensure knowledge and understanding of failures is communicated and implemented within the Business Units, and therefore future failures are prevented.

  • Liaise and coordinate with the UK and I&I; BUs the service plan review. Several and important changes are taken place in the scope of the service plans, the individual should have an important role to coordinate this revision projects inside GS and with the BUs.

  • Provide engineering support to the Global Operations Business Units in response to requests to resolve technical issues affecting production output and provide support during commercial negotiations with manufacturers regarding technical issues.

  • Lead technical analyses of design modifications proposed by equipment manufacturers and provide technical recommendations to the Head of Optimization Team to be communicated to the Heads of the Operations teams.

  • Develop solutions internally, when the ones proposed by the Wind Turbine Manufacturers are either not technically acceptable, or not viable from an economical point of view, ensuring that all technical deliverables meet Iberdrola Renewables business requirements.

  • Provide specific engineering support to the Offshore Business Unit by performing technical assessments of potential equipment suppliers, and support in detailed technical due diligences of components for shortlisted equipment suppliers to ensure knowledge and experience gained from the operational portfolio is incorporatedwithin all technical reviews.

  • Establish and lead role of UK BU Key Contact for Iberdrola’s Optimization Team for Life extension projects, to ensure fluid two-way interaction with the UK Business Unit, therefore allowing the operational experience and technical lessons learned within the Global Portfolio to be shared with the UK to maximize production.

  • Lead engagement on behalf of Iberdrola Renewables with Wind Turbine Manufacturers (like Siemens-Gamesa, GE or Vestas) to ensure technical issues being experienced by our assets, throughout the global portfolio, are addressed sufficiently, therefore minimizing the technical risk of reduced production.

  • Keeping abreast of new technical developments/techniques that may impact Iberdrola Renewables portfolio.

Requirements

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree.

  • Chartered or working towards chartership.

  • English language level: Bilingual (written and spoken)

  • Experience of Renewables / Power Generation industry.

  • Extensive technical and practical knowledge of wind turbine technology.

  • Understanding of design and structural issues associated with wind turbines

  • Experience of Condition Monitoring Systems

  • Experience of the operational performance of wind turbines.

  • Good knowledge of industry standards and regulations.

  • Ability to investigate problems such as Hydraulic failures, structural failures, mechanical resonances, etc.

  • Ability to provide technical input to produce, maintain & utilise company wind turbine standards for commercial purchase.

  • Ability to analyse technical problems, providing creative solutions when required.

  • Experience of managing international projects from launching tender processes through to work completion.

  • Pro-active and diligent approach to work activities.

  • Commercial understanding of Operation and Maintenance issues to ensure pragmatic decision making.

  • Experience of working remotely as part of a Global Team, supporting a global customer base.

  • Ability to manage and prioritise workload effectively.

  • Ability to identify and source external resources and skills to appropriate project delivery requirements.

  • Strong communication and negotiation skills with the ability to communicate with people at all levels of the organisation and to deal with third parties, project teams and consultants.

  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills

  • Experience of PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook and other Microsoft programs.
