Westar Energy is an electric utility serving approximately 685,000 customers in Kansas.
We are currently seeking candidates for three (3) Relay Technicians, wage rate $43.28 or Relay Technician Apprentices (Technician I thru IV), starting wage rate $33.55.
The reporting location for these positions will be at Westar’s Ripley Tech Ops location located at 4400 N. Seneca St., Wichita, Kansas.

The candidates must supply their qualifications in the documentation submitted to be considered for the position.
Technicians, Relay shall be skilled workers having four (4) years training as Technician Apprentice, Relay who possess the required knowledge, skill and physical ability to perform any work they may be called upon to do in connection with the installation, repair and maintenance of apparatus equipment and wiring used in system protection and control of substations and other equipment.
Provides technical support for other departments.
Minimum qualifications require a two (2) year college degree in electronics or the equivalent with a four year Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology degree preferred. They shall be qualified through knowledge and experience to assist other Technicians, Relay or Senior Technicians."
Technicians I thru IV “shall be skilled workers who because of their proven ability and aptitudes have been selected for training through a four (4) year apprenticeship to become a Technician, Relay. Minimum qualifications for a Technician, Relay I is a two (2) year college degree in electronics or the equivalent.
They shall be qualified through knowledge and experience to assist Technicians, Relay or Senior Technicians."
This is a highly technical position dealing with all types of power system control and protective relay schemes.
The successful candidate must possess skills in the following areas:
• Industrial controls
• Power systems
• Computer/digital instrumentation
• Local area networks and telecommunications
• Advanced math
• Interpersonal communications
The applicant will be required to live within 30 minutes of Ripley Tech Ops and will be subject to emergency call outs and overtime, at times with minimal notice, and will need to be prepared to work in wide-ranging climates and types of weather.
The successful applicant must be willing and able to fulfill overtime demands which can be can be significant and inconvenient at times. The successful applicant must to be willing to fill this need to maintain reliable electric service to Westar’s customers.
The applicant must have a satisfactory work record including good attendance.
