The Lead Engineer will be the lead subject matter expert for System Protection and Control and act as Distributed Energy Resource System Protection peer team lead within the Advanced Grid Planning/Integration technical peer team within the Customer Delivery Operational and Automation Standards team. The Lead Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work , and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. The Lead Engineer serves in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.
Act as DER System Protection peer team lead within the Advanced Grid Planning/Integration technical peer team within the Customer Delivery Operational and Automation Standards team, coordinating activities with Lead Engineer for DER Automation/Integration and peer technical team lead for Advanced Grid Planning/Integration.
Incumbent will act as subject matter expert (SME) in Microgrid/Defined Control Area/Energy Storage utility integration with specific focus on Protection/Automation/Control methodology for the Duke Energy Enterprise – Customer Delivery (Distribution).
Lead development of Engineering Guidebook for Integration of Distributed Energy Resources.
Incumbent will lead planning for standards related to protection equipment of an electric power distribution system microgrid to minimize interruption to service and danger to lives and equipment from abnormalities, such as overload, no load, black start, and short circuits: Studies drawings of power system and makes complex calculations to determine type, number, location, and correlation of protectors, such as relays, circuit breakers, fuses, and grounding devices.
Facilitate development of internal technical standards on testing, commissioning and standardization for microgrids/energy storage/defined control areas/other non-wire alternatives with primary focus on development of system standards related to protection and control in partnership with Lead Engineer for DER Automation/Integration.
Thought leader and subject matter expert in the integration of micro grids, grounding banks, and storage into Duke Energy’s system.
Direct technical design and operational support for Customer Delivery related to DER integration.
Internal and external stakeholder working group support (Trans Stds, DER Tech Stds, EPRI, IEEE, etc.) pertaining to DER integration, planning, and regulatory support.
Technical Policy Engagement - such as IEEE and EPRI.
Act as technical mentor to other engineers.
Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of expertise with the ability to visualize long-term results and assess impacts on a system-wide basis.
Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities where only limited standardization exists; handles differing situations which require searching for solutions within area of expertise.
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches with the ability to conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards relative to area of assignment.
Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating complex projects; applies extensive technical expertise to manage projects and disseminate knowledge to enhance the organizational unit's competitive position.
Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant to area of assignment. Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies procedures and equipment.
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Coaches and mentors other engineering and non-degreed engineering professionals.
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience
Registration as a Professional Engineer

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Incumbent should have the knowledge and ability to design, create standards, and evaluate system protection and control for distributed energy resource interconnections, micro grids, distribution, and transmission system protection, including specific conditions surrounding intentional islanding conditions, including black start.
Familiarity with industry standards such as IEEE1547-2018 and related standards (e.g. 1547.1, IEEE 2030 series standards, ANSI (Associated Electric Systems Interface), IEEEE 519 Harmonics; IEC 61850 Communication networks and systems for power utility automation.
Distribution capacity planning experience.
Distribution field engineering experience.
Experience with Integration of power plant, distributed resources, or major industrial/commercial/government customer load facilities.
Experience with SCADA control protocols, such as DNP, MODBUS, or IEC 61850.
Familiarity with communication control concepts.
Software: CYME, PSCAD, Mathcad, Simulink or other modeling software.
Skilled in engineering theories and principles.
Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Skilled principles of project management.
Experience in the utility industry.
