Engineer II - Distribution Operations / Power Quality Engineer–The distribution engineering field is expanding into a new age. Distributed energy resources and new technology is abound and APS is on the forefront. Smart technologies intermixed with classical equipment and distributed generation provides the Distribution System Operations Engineer many new opportunities. APS is looking for a Distribution Operations / Power Quality Engineer III or SR who can accept the challenge to master the new technologies and make a difference. Our engineer will provide technical knowledge and expertise for reliability to our distribution systems. Performs analysis on distribution circuits to allow for the installation and operationof distribution automation (DA) technologies, as well as distributed energy resources (DERs). Our engineer is responsible for peak load, short circuit analysis and will prepare Operations & Equipment reports. For new customer additions our engineer will perform capacity, voltage flicker and protection studies to support our district construction personnel. Using actual peak data and DA technology our engineer will trend distribution performance and identify sub-par performing feeders. Our engineer must maintain a thorough knowledge of new development and technology. Our engineer may also provide research on new developments & technology and make recommendations to management.
Minimum Requirements Engineer II
- A four year Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution
- plus two (2) years working experience in Engineering-related positions.
Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications
- Problem analysis/resolution techniques.
- Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, practices, methods and safety standards in the area of applicable engineering discipline.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- Professional Engineer licensure.
Responsibilities - What your day would be like:
Provide engineering support to Distribution Operations as required to ensure safe and reliable operation of the distribution system.
Perform modeling, simulation and analysis on distribution circuits using the CYME distribution modeling tool, and ensure valid distribution feeder models are maintained in both CYME and ADMS systems.
Perform studies to ensure system protection and coordination, voltage, and flicker requirements are being met for new loads and system modifications.
Develop settings and device configurations for switches, reclosers, capacitors, voltage regulators, and other devices needed to support reliable operation and automation of the distribution system.
Understand the effects of and recommend areas of need that distributed energy resources (DER) can be implemented.
Provide technical knowledge and expertise to ensure reliability and stability of our distribution system.
Maintain a thorough knowledge of industry trends and technology through involvement and/or interaction with research institutes (EPRI, etc.), research labs (NREL, etc.) and regulatory bodies (PUC).
Provide research on new developments & technology and make recommendations to management.
Provide technical support to APS O&M personnel including Operations, Troublemen, Key Account Managers, and other field personnel regarding power quality related issues
Support APS field personnel in setting up power quality recording equipment (i.e. PMI Revolution and/or Dranetz HDPQ) for data measurement (voltage, current, harmonics, etc)
Collect field data and analyze power quality issues at the customer & distribution system level.
Respond to and work with external customers as required.
Troubleshoot Customer related complaints in regards to harmonics, flicker, equipment operation/malfunction, etc.
