Summary All hourly jobs are considered as open for bid on a continuous basis. Any BPA employee on a competitive career or career-conditional appointment may, at any time, submit an application for permanent promotions, reassignments, or change of duty stations. In order to assure all interested employees are considered, candidates are solicited annually through a Continuous Vacancy Announcement - Hourly Jobs (Bid List) identifying those jobs and duty locations, for which they wish to be considered. Responsibilities As a Data System Craftsman, you will: Perform software and hardware maintenance (e.g., installation, configuration, modification, diagnose, repair, security, backup and restoration) for the full range of standalone and networked data systems located in BPA Control Centers. Perform network administration functions such as installation, update, patch, configuration, troubleshooting client-server network software such as Windows, Windows Server, VMS, SUN OS, Linux, etc. and database administration. Perform network security functions such as the installation, configuration, modification, diagnose, repair, backup, restoration, and updates. OPSEC configuration and day-to-day operation and maintenance of rule sets. Prepares reports which in general are a collection of test data, instrument readings, descriptions of symptoms observed on maintenance performed, and other pertinent information which can be used by the engineer or information technology specialist to make a determination on equipment operations. The DSC also writes and updates maintenance, inventory and operational procedure documents. Performs miscellaneous duties related to the maintenance and support of the control center. These duties include design assistance, testing and energization, suggesting modifications and modifying existing control center equipment under the supervision of an engineer or information technology specialist. Perform the more difficult and the non-routine types of maintenance (e.g., build and install) work under the technical direction of an engineer or information technology specialist. Requirements Conditions of Employment When you apply you will be asked a series of questions to determine your eligibility for employment and your qualification for this position specifically. You must answer all of these questions completely and truthfully. Become fully knowledgeable with and follow the safety practices of the BPA Accident Prevention Manual. If exposed to health hazards, have periodic physical examinations as prescribed by competent medical authority at BPA expense. Shift work is required, if so determined by the supervisor. Subject to call for emergency work at any time. Operate motor vehicles, usually sedans or van-type trucks. Obtain and maintain a required worker (e.g., electrical, restricted, etc.) and facility access permits. When required by management, obtain and maintain standard clearance certification. Establish a residence in accordance with negotiated requirements, which is within one hour or less commuting time under normal weather and road conditions, to the duty station headquarters. Possess within one year after appointment and maintain continuously thereafter, a valid First Aid card and a CPR card. Travel to other BPA work sites, if required by the supervisor. Complies with Control Center Rules of Conduct, BPA and Control Center Network Cyber Security Policies. This position requires a pre-employment medical exam, at BPA expense, prior to appointment due to the physical requirements of the position. Possess valid State driver's license. Traffic citations indicating poor driving habits may disqualify applicants. WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is located at the Dittmer Control Center or at the Munro Control Center. Data system maintenance or other emergency work may be required at any time. The work may result in the exposure to high voltages (i.e., several thousand volts) in some types of equipment, continuous high ambient noise levels (e.g., cooling fans, blowers, etc.) and exposure to higher level noise bursts is normally present. There is some work performed in close proximity to moving machinery. The work may require working from ladders or lifts at heights up to 20 feet. PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: Incumbents must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others.
