Position Summary

Duke Energy, Fossil Hydro Operations (FHO) is seeking energetic, hardworking internship or co-op engineering students with an interest in the generation of electric power for the electric power industry. As an FHO engineering student, you’ll not only gain exposure to a wide range of technical and operational opportunities, you’ll acquire critical insight into our company and our industry. In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop valuable networking connections which will help prepare and develop your skills for future career opportunities. Work assignments begin in January and June of 2021. This position is for students pursuing degrees in undergraduate studies in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (non-technology). In addition to working within your discipline, you may be asked to work across a multi-engineering discipline platform.

As a student worker, you will complete specific deliverables and make a final presentation to FHO leaders at the end of your work period. You will gain experience working in both office and field locations. Some travel would be involved. Work schedule will typically be Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day. Students that enjoy a challenge, are willing to learn and contribute, and can be productive in both team and independent settings are ideal candidates.

Working location: Indiana/Ohio/Kentucky

Basic Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a four-year degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program. (ABET Accreditation can be verified here:

  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75

  • Available to work a minimum of two rotations

  • Valid driver’s license

Desired Qualifications

  • Enrolled in the co-op program at an accredited college or university or the ability to be enrolled in the program prior to start date

  • Class status as a Sophomore or Junior

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • Available to work three co-op rotations is preferred

  • Previous engineering experience working as an intern or co-op

  • Desire to pursue a career in the energy industry

  • Ability to interface with all levels of management

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated history of achievements and personal performance

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities through effective decision making

  • Works effectively with others from diverse backgrounds to solve problems and implement solutions

  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in use of computers, software, and engineering applications

  • Demonstrated time management skills

Specific Requirements

  • Depending on work location, may be required to meet requirements for unescorted access/security clearance.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, appropriate clothing, ear plugs, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

Working Conditions

  • Office and plant environment - requires walking, light lifting, infrequent climbing, and occasional exposure to temperature and noise.
