Position Summary

Internships are available within various functions of the Carolinas Distribution Engineering Operations organization. These positions will be located in multiple cities across the NC/SC service territory. Interns will undertake short-term responsibilities which may involve any or all of the following: distribution modeling, infrastructure/project design, optimization analysis, automation device interrogation, CYME study review, work order management, field visits, performance reporting, outage investigations, and other duties assigned in support of Distribution Operations.

These intern positions are open to students pursuing undergraduate (BS) degrees in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering. In addition to working within your discipline, you may be asked to work across a multi-engineering discipline platform.

Work locations in NC will be Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, and surrounding areas with possible occasional travel around the Duke Energy service territory. Work locations in SC will be Greenville and surrounding areas with possible occasional travel around the Duke Energy service territory. The interns selected will be assigned to a specific location and operational function based on work needs. Interns will be asked for input regarding location preferences.

In addition to the Microsoft suite of software, other software applications utilized by electric utilities may be used.

Working Conditions

  • Office and field environment – requires walking, light lifting, infrequent climbing, and occasional exposure to temperature and noise

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a four year (BS) degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering at an accredited college or university with an anticipated graduation date of December 2019 or after

  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite software

Desired Qualifications

  • Anticipated graduation date of December 2020 or beyond with availability for multiple summer internships while pursuing degree

  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrates ability to provide the quantity and quality of work necessary to reach an accomplishment

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities through effective decision making

  • Works effectively with others from diverse backgrounds to achieve common goal

  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work

  • Demonstrates tenacity by remaining persistence in the face of difficulty

  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in use of computers, software, and engineering applications

  • Desire to pursue a career in the energy industry

  • Previous engineering work experience is a plus

Specific Requirements

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, appropriate clothing, ear plugs, fall protection, etc.) as needed

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
