Job Description

Core Responsibilities

  • Ensures implementation of the company Safety, Health and Environmental (EH&S) programs for employees whose work is directed. Ensures that safe work practices are followed and the environment is fully protected in accordance with Company policy and governmental regulations.

  • Develop operational and maintenance test instructions for relays.

  • Lead and develop written evaluation of system disturbances and coordination with Engineering and submit ESR.

  • Develop test plan for microprocessor and electromechanical relays.

  • Provide necessary training for relay technicians

  • Act as technical liaison between Central Engineering and various groups Cyber Security Training Program and aspects of Personnel Risk Assessment Program.

  • Develop Capital project justification.

  • Evaluate maintenance practices and develop more efficient and reliable methods.

  • Review and comment on Engineering design concept for relays and relay upgrades.

  • Industry involvement with EPRI, NATF and other organizations on relay applications.

  • Familiarize with all the NERC CIP standards.

  • Develop a thorough understanding of CIP 002, CIP 007 and CIP 010.

  • Ensure microprocessor relays are in compliances as CIP 002, CIP 007 and CIP 010.

  • Interfaces with designated organizations and departments at O&R and CECONY, and with service vendors and contractors, to achieve sustainable compliance with NERC CIP requirements.

  • Make presentations as required, and at the executive level.

  • Performs a role in cascading Human Performance Improvement (HPI) error avoidance tools to ensure they are a part of the fabric of operations for all Protective System and Testing (PST) personnel and are incorporated into all daily work activities.

  • Conduct and participate in Field evaluation/analysis of equipment or system maloperations, prepare failure analysis reports and other analysis as may required.

  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering 2 Years Experience (Associate Engineer A 1H) Relative work experience in power systems Engineering Experience working on various relay systems Or

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering 3 Years Experience (Engineer 2L) Relative work experience in power systems Engineering Experience working on various relay systems

Required Work Experience

  • Engineering Experience in any of the following areas: Power System, relay Protection, Microprocessor based relays. Required

  • Must Demonstrate the ability to learn and apply new topics. Required

  • Must have knowledge on Protest and various relay software. Preferred

  • Must have strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and VISIO.

  • Acute knowledge with North America Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) CIP Standards.

  • Must be able to deliver exemplary customer service and develop a team spirited work environment in support of Con Edison's corporate values and mission.

  • Must possess superior oral and written communication skills, champion change and have the ability to influence other in order to improve the management process.

  • Must be well organized, detailed oriented flexible to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.

  • Must be able to exercise independent judgement and possess the ability to render sound business decisions.

Skills & Ability

  • Ability to interpret basic information on drawings.

  • Demonstrated problem solving skills

  • Possesses strong technical aptitude

Licenses & Certifications

  • Driver's License Required

Physical Demands

  • Must respond to system emergencies

  • Must work at field locations in all weather conditions

  • Must work in an environment that includes heat, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations

  • Must climb ladders and stairs

  • Must work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)

  • Must work with and in the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems

  • Must be approved and able to wear either a full- or half-face respirator without facial hair or other condition that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations.

  • Must travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies

  • Must use eye-hand coordination to adjust controls on equipment

  • Must wear all necessary personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including; fire retardant clothing and safety harness

Other Physical Demands

  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
