One Gas GIS Specialist in Topeka, Kansas

Position Description:

Provides intermediate level GIS-based mapping services to the Engineering & Asset Management Division to support planning, engineering, operations, and safety activities companywide.

Utilize GIS software to update and maintain distribution and/or transmission gas system and land base spatial data based on information received from internal field operations and external sources.

Analyze and interpret source documentation (engineering drawings, material sheets, CAD drawings, etc.) for completeness, correctness, and usability.

Directly communicates with business operations personnel to resolve source documentation problems.

Provides quality control review of data and products and high level user support for GIS product and application end users.

Participate on data improvement project teams.

Regular and reliable attendance is required in performance of job.

Employee may be required to perform additional duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:


  • GIS experience and/or training are strongly preferred

  • Maximo experience would be a plus

Preferred Associate's Degree GIS or related field

Demonstrated ability to follow regulatory requirements for the gas pipeline and utility industry, including company standards and procedures.

Demonstrated working knowledge of applicable systems used by the ONE Gas including but not limited to: ArcGIS Desktop, ArcFM Toolset, and Maximo. For transmission assignments, demonstrated ability to learn the Eagle Information Mapping toolset, the ArcGIS Pipeline Data Model (APDM) and ArcFM.

Working knowledge or training including but not limited to:

  • Basic geospatial concepts including:

  • Coordinate systems and map projections

  • Data formats

  • Table and spatial queries

  • External data processing: format conversion, spatial adjustment, attribute mapping

  • Modeling of GIS data using software application tools and/or database standards

  • Utilizing GIS systems for pipeline management

  • Acquire data, integrate with GPS; analyze data

  • Raster data management and analysis

  • Evaluate, integrate, and process GPS data

Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and processes to support initiatives to improve.

Experience in a high volume, deadline driven, high performance environment.

Demonstrated ability to read and write fluently in English

Minimum Applicable driver's license

Mobility to travel in and around job sites system wide.

Able to operate tools and equipment required.

Remain stationary for extended periods.

Lift or move objects weighing up to 10 pounds 2-5 times a day; up to 30 pounds once a day; over 50 pounds once a week.

Proactive communication, by telephone and email, with operations and other personnel to gather clarification and additional information on submitted work order materials.
