Job Purpose

The position responsibilities encompass a range of duties including power system disturbance analysis, development of protection policy and standards, support for disturbance monitoring equipment including phasor measurement units. Technical support and expertise to protection engineering, asset management, planning and other functions as required.

Key Accountabilities
  • Development of policy and standards related to protection system design and application, disturbance monitoring equipment (DME) and phasor measurement units (PMU).

  • Support the design, application, installation, and maintenance of DME and PMUs, and the communication network associated with these devices.

  • Review and support the implementation of system protection design standards and asset health strategies in consultation with the Control and Integration Engineering, Substation Engineering and Design, Transmission Planning, Distribution Planning, and the Relay Testing and Commissioning groups.

  • Analysis of protection system operations and where applicable develop and execute corrective actions to improve protection system design and performance.

  • Knowledge of NPCC Directories and requirements, NERC PRC and CIP requirements; their application and compliance.

  • Represent the company on industry committees and participate in the formulation of industry-wide standards and practices.

  • Manage the day to day relationship with relevant internal and external parties in order to understand their requirements, deliver appropriate customized solutions and advice; build cross-functional working in line with National Grid policies and processes.

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
  • Able to lead and supervise a project team or virtual teams to achieve business objectives.
Qualifications

A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited engineering program.

Minimum of 5 years protection and control work experience

Good working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and existing electrical design codes.

Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

Knowledge of network hardware, configuring LANs, and software maintenance is a plus.

Demonstrated experience and ability to plan, direct, and execute technical work with a minimum amount of guidance and supervision.

Knowledge of and experience with electric power facilities with an emphasis on protection and control systems preferred.

Proficient MS Office computer skills (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)

This position will support both NE and Upstate NY. Travel will be expected between the two areas as needed.

Valid driver's license required.
