About the Graduate Development Program

National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) (https://careers.nationalgridus.com/graduate-development-program) is an in-depth training and development program for high achieving recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry. Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth Orientation which gives you exposure to all part of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US. Following Orientation, Graduates begin working in their hired position and take part ongoing development activities through your first year including monthly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Capstone Project at the completion of your first year with National Grid.

National Grid is aiming for an in-person GDP experience for Summer 2022. However, we will continue to monitor the impacts of COVID-19 and will shift to a virtual program if necessary, in order to honor our commitment to our young talent pipeline.

Job Purpose

Primarily responsible for engineering design, implementation, integration, and troubleshooting support for telecommunications and data network systems involving electric transmission, distribution, sub-transmission, metering and other grid technologies. The NY Telecom Engineering Department is focused on telecommunications technology development for National Grid’s U.S. business. Our team culture is self-directed and empowered. Team members work on a wide range of projects; taking innovative concepts/ visions and making them a reality. We enable our energy future through projects supporting wind and PV generation, energy storage, smart grid and transportation electrification. We are hiring engineers for projects in our NY jurisdiction.

As an Assistant Associate Engineer in the department, you will participate in the specification, design, and implementation of innovative communications and networking technologies for the electric distribution and sub-transmission systems. Primary areas of responsibility include: support the evaluation of emerging technologies; participation in equipment specification and selection; assist in performing end-to-end solution design including validation and testing of communications systems. You will work under close supervisor by senior engineers/managers to develop the technical and organizational skills necessary to move up in rank following our Engineering Progression Framework.

You will work closely with our other engineering departments to provide communications solutions for projects assigned to those groups. You will also assist in development of long-term strategies for fiber network infrastructure and field area networks supporting grid controls, monitors, meters and other fixed and mobile devices.

Key Accountabilities

  • Perform routine engineering work requiring application of standard techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out engineering tasks.

  • Complete assignments that are designed to develop professional work knowledge and abilities while being guided by engineering manager and/or more senior engineers.

  • Assist with executing instructions and requests, plan and organize resources, and make appropriate arrangements to ensure that work is carried out efficiently and in line with policies and processes.

  • Actively engage our IT and third party communications partners in the development of end to end communications solutions.

  • Build and nurture relationships with industry peers and other external industry influencers to keep abreast of technical innovations and their potential benefits.

  • Support storm restoration efforts in addition to normal job duties.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Egineering from an accredited institution

  • Graduated between May 2021 and June 2022

  • Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program May 31, 2022 or June 27, 2022

  • Valid US driver’s license

  • Proven leadership experience

  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills

  • Applicants for the Graduate Development Program must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States

  • Basic understanding of program management tasks.

  • Effective verbal and written communicaion skills with the ability to to communicate across all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to work overtime and/or holidays, nights, weekends, as needed.

  • Some travel required.
