About The Position

Manager, Application Database Services is responsible for the leadership & execution of the Application Database Services team for Digital Technology (DT) and Utility Operations Technology (UOT). Primary responsibilities include oversight of database performance and tuning efforts in support of various application teams. Technologies such as Sybase, MS SQL, Oracle, and AWS database platforms. Additional responsibilities include planning for database technologies and lifecycle, developing standards for application teams and maintaining security and currency of those environments. The Manager will collaborate with leaders across Digital and Ameren to ensure DT/UOT operations are continuously improving, optimized, evolving from reactive to proactive, leveraging automation to create efficiencies, and executing on strategic goals/objectives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Inspire and drive continuous improvements and operational excellence capabilities across Development teams and Operations

  • Drive standardization, automation, process improvement and enhancements to deliver maximum value, quality and efficiencies to support business needs

  • Must be able to present to different audiences and adjust accordingly (business, technical and management) either structured presentations or ad-hoc.

  • Must be able to establish and maintain business relationships with individual contributors as well as management.

  • Evaluate programs, policies and procedures. Identify issues and develop alternative solutions which may include changes to programs, policies and procedures for area of responsibility.

  • Develop, analyze, and refine KPI’s & metrics based on organizational, department, and business unit goals.

  • Use metrics based performance goals to direct and manage team success

  • Review and analyze trends to advise and develop recommendation to achieve and modify operational excellence goals and effectively report the health of Digital Operations through metrics.

  • Understand business priorities, rationalizes demand and communicate priorities to ensure teams are working on the highest value activities

  • Drive and influence operational excellence and continuous improvements across teams.

  • Lead proactive problem-solving efforts on core DTO services and key projects to improve quality, reduce cost and eliminate waste.

  • Lead performance and tuning efforts for applications interfaces with various database technologies

  • Establish enterprise standards and best practices for applications developers interfaces with various databases technologies

  • Collaborate and engage with development team to forecast new workstreams and resource requirements

  • Understand the platform lifecycle and ensure that application teams are aware and planning to keep systems updated on supported versions of the database platforms

  • Identify opportunities to automate and migrate monitoring and first level response activities to the command center. Transfer knowledge and develop scripts so that off shift resources can provide support and escalate to DBA team as appropriate. Transfer knowledge to the command center to drive positive first contact resolution.

  • Collaborate with automation team to find opportunities to automate build and deployment processes as well as self-healing processes and procedures that leverage existing automation scripts and tools to enable efficient 24/7/365 operational excellence

  • Work with cloud, platform, and architecture teams to understand the trend in database technology adoption and help drive the standards that will be used to drive platform skills investments.

  • Assess training needs and develop associated training plans and programs for teams around necessary skillsets

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Management Information System, Business Administration, or equivalent computer related degree from an accredited college or university required. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Five or more years of related IT experience required with extensive background in one or more of the following IT disciplines: Operations, Infrastructure, Security, Service Management, Project Management

  • Three or more years of supervisory and high-level team/project leadership required. Strong management and effective leadership experience.

  • Superior analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving abilities; a strategic thinker.

  • Exceptional ability to lead change and drive operational excellence, removes barriers, acts with a sense of urgency, and leads by example.

  • Proven track record of delivering complex IT services in a diverse environment.

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience with ServiceNow and other IT management tools

  • Ability to facilitate relations between business groups and technology departments.

  • Strong facilitation skills as well as the ability to work with team members, providing assistance and guidance as needed.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively both with technical personnel and senior leaders.
