Duke Energy is currently seeking highly motivated students for summer engineering internships within our nuclear generation organization. Internship will begin in May and last 12 weeks through mid-August. Potential candidates must be currently enrolled in one of the following bachelor’s degree programs at an ABET accredited four-year college or university and must have completed a minimum of one year of studies prior to beginning the internship.

The internships will be located across the fleet at the following locations applicants MUST be willing to work at any of the following Duke Energy location:

  • Brunswick Nuclear Plant (Southport, NC)

As an intern, you will be responsible for assisting engineers in providing support to ensure safe, reliable and economic plant operations in the following areas:

Cyber Security Engineering

This position provides central (General Office) support of nuclear generating site(s) for the development, implementation, communication, monitoring and maintenance of the Nuclear Generation Department (NGD) cyber security program as described in the NGD Cyber Security Plan. This includes identification Operational Technology (OT) and Industrial Control Systems and Components (ICS) of critical systems and critical digital assets, addressing cyber security controls for each critical digital asset (CDA), maintaining cyber security attack mitigation & incident response capability and all other aspects of the plan.

Opportunities exist for work in a broad range of areas, including, but not limited to, the design and development of software, servers, network components, and cyber security appliances. Documentation, in the form of installation instructions, maintenance manuals, etc. is a key responsibility.

Fleet Nuclear Digital Process Systems (FNDPS) Projects typically focus on the integration of various vendor and custom developed products to solve a particular station issue.

Potential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Address cyber security controls for OT/ICS

  • Provide for ongoing monitoring/assessment of the program

  • Participate in attack mitigation and incident response

  • Maintain a cyber security contingency plan

  • Managing technical content of the security training requirements

  • Maintain cyber security policies and implementing procedures

  • Participate in Cyber Security Assessment Team (CSAT)

  • Maintain function of standalone malware scanning kiosk

  • Managing Security Event and Incident Management devices

  • Ensuring implementation of fleet cyber security policies and procedures into site processes

    Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing an Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institute (ABET Accreditation can be verified here: http://main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx )

  • Minimum GPA of 2.75 or higher

  • Must not graduate prior to December 2022

    Desired Qualifications:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • Ability to work 12 weeks from May through August of Summer 2022

  • Demonstrated leadership ability (holds self-accountable, shows initiative, maintains composure under stress, able to multi-task, etc.)

  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, team leadership, and analytical skills to resolve a variety of technical and process related issues

  • Interest in working in the Nuclear Energy Industry

  • Demonstrated problem solving and analysis skills

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team as well as independently, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities

    Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to meet requirements for nuclear station “Unescorted Access/Security Clearance”.

  • Work schedule will be Monday-Thursday, 10 hours shift
