Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. As a whole, Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response.

Support the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the transmission and distribution pipeline systems through the proactive use of asset knowledge, threat identification and analytical tools to increase operational efficiency, improve system integrity and minimize safety risk to employees and the communities we operate in.
The Transmission Integrity Management Group is responsible for assessing the integrity of the gas transmission system, facilitating repairs when necessary, and developing and implementing strategic mitigation plans for all gas assets.
This Gas Engineer position will work with the In-Line Inspection (ILI) engineering team to manage and implement the ILI Program for gas transmission pipelines system-wide. This position is located within the Transmission Integrity Management Program, which is responsible for maintaining and operating 6,700 miles of gas transmission pipelines throughout northern and central California. Pipeline safety regulations mandate the company to inspect all gas transmission pipelines located in High Consequence Areas. This position will focus on planning and facilitating successful completion of inspection runs, reviewing the ILI data, selecting locations to examine pipelines based upon ILI data, assisting with technically sound repair decisions, and developing mitigation items based upon ILI results. This position will report to the Supervising Gas Engineer of ILI.
ILI Planning and Field Support
- Responsible for planning and implementing the cleaning and inspection runs including engineering of launcher/receiver piping and filtration equipment, selection of ILI tools and vendors, and development of hydraulic strategies to support successful inspections.
ILI Data Evaluation
- Perform detailed evaluation of all ILI data provided by the vendor. Recommend locations to excavate for calibration/verification of ILI data quality and provide field support during this work, including mapping of corrosion, evaluation of repair methods and performing remaining pipe strength calculations. Perform root cause analysis as required on pipeline defects and develop mitigation items to prevent future reoccurrences.
Communication and Documentation
- Document all aspects and of ILI projects and ensure critical data is shared among other groups like Risk Management, Corrosion Engineering, and Pipeline Engineering. Communicate results of ILI assessments to both internal and external stakeholders.
Contributing to the ILI Program
- Provide ongoing feedback and recommendations regarding the development of the ILI program and how planning and implementation can be improved on future projects. It is critical that both technical and managerial lessons learned on each project be integrated into the overall program in order to allow the company to continually improve both the ILI program and Pipeline Integrity Management in general.
Bachelors Degree in Engineering-Mechanical or job-related discipline or equivalent experience
Experience in transmission operations, 3 years
Experience related to natural gas utilities, In-Line Inspection, Pipeline Design, and/or Integrity Management
Knowledge of 49 CFR 192
Knowledge of natural gas operations or gas system planning
EIT or PE license
Understanding of Pipeline Hazardous Materials & Safety Administration (PHMSA) and California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) codes and regulations an
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to balance a diverse portfolio of projects and tasks occurring simultaneously
Ability to work well in a team environment, including both the office and field
