San Diego Gas & Electric Relay Technician Instructor in San Diego, California
The Relay Technician Instructor aids in the training and development of new relay technicians. Assist with writing procedures and policies. Provide general expertise and support for the group.Provides assistance with maintaining and developing test routines for the automated relay testing software, the implementation of the maintenance management system (MMS) in the field with relay technicians, and field practices for CIP standards. Helps ensure construction standards are met and correct documentation is submitted when work is performed by contractors. Provides trouble call support. Spends approximately 80% of time in the field.
Assists with on-the-job training of relay technicians. This includes overseeing activities in the field, providing assistance in developing and updating procedures and practices, reviewing training materials, and giving feedback to employees and supervision on training progression. Training includes, but is not limited to, use of RTS, Powerbase and Cascade. Provides training for the reading and correction of substation drawings and as needed for general control schemes. Aids with training for special control systems such as series capacitors, synchronous condensers and static var compensators. Provides general support and expertise for group.
Coordinates with Major Projects to ensure large projects with relay packages have appropriate documentation needed by System Protection Maintenance for relay calibration, trip testing and compliance. Attends scheduling and construction meetings, tailboards, and/or other relevant meetings to support the department’s goals. Upon completion of project, ensures deliverable have been satisfied, including as-built drawings and test results.
Aids with developing and maintaining RTS test routines for existing and new relays.
Collaborates with Substation Engineering Design on job walks for new designs.
Provides trouble call support. Takes initial trouble calls for SPM, performs call-out for relay technicians, and provides technical support for technicians who take calls.
Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Five years’ experience with relay testing and substation construction required.
Standing as a Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) is highly desirable.
Must have good communication skills and the ability to follow established standards.
Computer skills and thorough knowledge RTS, Powerbase, and Cascade is required.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is highly desirable.
Must have the ability to balance multiple priorities and solve problems.
Analytical skills desirable.
Ability to learn and understand construction standards and methods, safety regulations, and applicable state and Federal regulations.
Extended hours (nights, weekends, holidays) may be required.
