About SONGS:

The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station was shut down in June 2013 and is the process of decommissioning. Right now, SCE is in the process of securing all the appropriate permits to begin the dismantlement of the plant, which will take several years. During this time, work continues to prepare the station and a robust, external outreach program is in place to ensure the public is informed of the decommissioning process and the steps SCE is taking to ensure it is being done safely.

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Principal Manager of Communications, you will oversee and administer plant tours and other public outreach events regarding the decommissioning of San Onofre Nuclear Station. Last year, the station hosted more than 75 events and continues to be the “go to” station for the public, industry leaders and elected officials to learn about decommissioning and dry cask storage. Your strong planning and execution skills, good decision making and attention to detail will aid you as you interface with senior station leaders, members of the public, anti-nuclear activists and members of the news media

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and administer the day-to-day activities in support of public walking tours at SONGS.

  • Responsibilities include scheduling dates, outreach to confirm guests, badging, securing tour guides, site logistics and preparations, maintaining tour collateral and talking points, and staffing the events.

  • Troubleshoot, exercise judgement and resolve tour issues in accordance with station policies and security procedures.

  • Quantify and provide program recommendations and improvements based on analysis from multiple channels including verbal and written feedback.

  • Provide coordination support for VIP tours, school events and education booths at the station and Community Engagement Panel meetings.

  • Responsible for badging, securing tour guides, site logistics and preparations, staffing events, and maintaining collateral.

  • Monitor the Nuclear Communications 800 number and the NuComm email box daily and facilitate responses with the appropriate person. Assist with assembling materials and logistics for other communications events, including preparation of presentation materials given by other, for both external and internal audiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience with project management and operational policies, procedures and practices

  • Four years of experience in an analytical position

  • Experience communicating effectively to the public or with people who may be adversarial in nature

  • Experience recommending and initiating improvements

  • Flexibility in working some evenings and some Saturdays as needed

  • Local travel up to 5% to help support outreach events.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree or equivalent combination of education, experience and training

  • Experience in working with large groups of students and teachers

  • Experience in planning events for large groups of people (over 70 people)

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal

  • General knowledge of SONGS

  • Strong team player

  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail


  • Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work directly as employees for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.

  • Position will require up to 5% traveling for local outreach events

  • Relocation does not apply to this position

  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties
