This intern position will support the GIS – High Pressure Mapping group. The group is currently engaged in several projects for system improvement. These include the implementation of an as-built data collection solution for new pipeline construction and conflation of legacy asset data to improve spatial accuracy. Daily GIS operations include loading as-constructed and inspection data, reconciling and editing GIS data, generating reports and maps, and maintaining integrations to other systems. Daily tasks are coordinated with Pipeline Integrity Management and Engineering groups, Records Management, Survey, System Planning and Analysis, High Pressure Operations, Right-of Way, etc. Future plans include enhanced system integrations, improved data sharing and analysis, and pipeline GIS database and software upgrades.
Successful candidate will report to the Supervisor-GIS.
Follow and improve workflows to load and maintain accurate GIS data for pipeline construction and maintenance activities in a timely manner
Interpret and analyze pipe records to reconcile GIS data with source documentation
Provide basic support to GIS stakeholders, including GIS data requests and maps
Perform simple and routine math calculations and conversions for maintaining linear referencing data and creating reports
Help others as needed to research pipeline information and review data quality
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Operation and use of Esri ArcGIS Desktop
Simple and routine mapping processes and procedures using GIS software and company pipeline documentation
Basic GPS and survey practices
GIS database terminology such as feature classes, attributes, relationships and system configuration (PODS data model and/or experience using linear referencing systems preferred)
Routine data projections and raster geo-referencing
Personal computer and software applications (i.e., Esri ArcGIS Desktop, Google Earth, Microsoft Office)
Company standard practices and pipeline industry terminology
Basic mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry
Problem solving skills
Communicate effectively orally and in writing; load data from multiple formats (i.e., CAD, CSV, shape, KML) into GIS
Create shape files, personal geodatabases, feature datasets, features, attributes, relationships and spatial references
Convert GIS data formats; support map files published for ArcGIS Server
Create and print maps and drawings from GIS and CAD systems
Read civil and mechanical engineering design drawings, field notes and surveys; understand and respond to written and oral instructions
Interact effectively in-person, by electronic communication and by telephone
Write using proper format, punctuation, grammar and spelling
See objects at close range
Determine the distance and relationship between objects
Work independently with minimal supervision
Contribute to a positive work environment
Be courteous to co-workers and customers, follow directions from supervisors
Must be pursuing a bachelor's degree or certificate in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or a related degree from an accredited institution
Students must have an anticipated graduation date between 2020 and 2021.
Prefer students with a graduation date in 2020
Students must have a 2.5 minimum GPA
