Summary

Spire is seeking a Workers’ Compensation Claims Specialist to work in St. Louis. This position will be responsible for investigating and resolving workers’ compensation claims for all of Spire’s territory.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Investigate, evaluate and determine compensability on workers’ compensation injuries as mandated by various state laws in Spire’s territory through our self-insured program. This involves interaction with injured employees; supervisors; medical providers and nursing staff for claims as assigned by WC Claims Manager.

  • Handle WC claims; ensure timely and appropriate closure of all claims assigned.

  • Enter appropriate claim information into the claim system including setting up new claims; claim notes; payments; claim reviews.

  • Analyze exposure; set proper reserves; administer benefits per state laws.

  • Work with Safety and Operations on loss control and preventative programs.

  • Complete state forms and file with each state timely.

  • Manage statistical data including OSHA record keeping.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with medical providers, nursing staff and legal in Spire’s territory.

  • Pursue recovery; report cases to excess carrier and Captive.

  • Direct outside counsel with assistance of WC Claims Manager and Legal.

  • Maintain a high level of professional ethics and compliance.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to build and establish rapport with a diverse array of people.

  • Attend seminars and conferences for continuing education relative to legal and/or medical matters to ensure up to date knowledge of workers’ compensation in Spire’s territory.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of equivalent experience.

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • Three plus years of prior Worker’s Compensation claims adjusting (or commensurate) experience, required.

  • Knowledge of workers’ compensation laws, required.

  • Knowledge of workers' compensation laws in Missouri, preferred.

  • Knowledge of state statutes.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, diagnosis, and treatment protocols.

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and recording requirements.

  • Strong investigative and fact-gathering skills.

  • Ability to comprehend and analyze facts.

  • Must have professional interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate at all levels effectively.

  • Good knowledge of PC Skills, with an understanding of Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Ability to evaluate and estimate the Company’s potential exposure and the appropriate monetary reserve needed to settle any WC claims made against the Company.

  • Ability to obtain recorded/written statements from Company employees.

  • Ability to evaluate and negotiate to a successful conclusion with the injured worker and/or plaintiff attorney for WC claims.

  • Must have the ability to influence others and gain consensus.

Physical demands, environment and schedule

  • Requires occasional work during nonstandard business hours with periodic travel and will require you at times to be on call during evenings and weekends.
