Purpose The Digital Education and eLearning Designer creates and produces digital learning content, including interactive e-courses, webinars, animated and live videos, and other resources for SMUD’s residential, commercial, and educational customers. The position is also responsible for managing SMUD’s online workshop and event registration system, delivering automated registration reminders, monitoring class attendance, and managing social content and other distribution channels.

This position establishes a single point of accountability for digital educational design, content, functionality or coordination of related activities within our Energy Education & Technology Center; Serves as a journey-level resource in a relevant professional discipline; works independently on projects of minor to moderate complexity; exercises independent judgment and discretion within established broad guidelines.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with subject matter experts to design and develop animated and live video content, including storyboards and scripts with text, voice, sound, and graphics.

  • Utilize video editing software to create, edit, or add graphics, animations, voice-over or music to existing video footage; create custom graphics and animations as needed to enhance the learning experience.

  • Design and produce digital learning content to meet the needs of different customer segments.

  • Design, develop and revise eLearning courses, validating learning objectives and course effectiveness.

  • Oversight of e-marketing materials and activities including email blasts and e-survey development for educational content and courses.

  • Manage course registration process and monitor content consumption.

  • Establish best practices surrounding content development, materials, media and testing.

  • Coordinate with internal graphic design and communications team members to complete timely projects; coordinates content, design, or technical functions needed to support key campaigns, 3 or 5 year strategic goals or user experience strategy working with other Digital and User Experience staff and other business unit partners. Continually updates, maintains and communicates changes to affected work areas in a timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications Education:

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in web technologies, digital media, graphic design or a closely related field.


Three or more (3+) years’ progressively responsible relevant experience working with graphic design, micro-learning, responsive design, gamification, simulations, or similar related field.

Knowledge of:

  • Strong knowledge and application of adult learning theory and instructional design principles with a focus on eLearning/virtual design and training methodologies utilizing the latest interactive learning technologies.

  • Proficiency with content authoring tools including Articulate, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and Illustrator), Adobe Premier Pro and After Affects, Captivate or similar animation programs, Adobe Audition or other audio editing software, and/or additional tools.

  • Ability to effectively articulate and communicate instructional requirements for content, clarity, style, spelling, and grammar.

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate with, influence and impact people at multiple learning levels.

  • eLearning instructional design and content development.

  • Communicate and simplify complex and technical concepts through visuals and animations.

Skill to:

Plan the efficient use of SMUD’s digital outreach channels; work with interdisciplinary teams to establish and maintain an effective tracking system for performance and utilization; interpret and apply technical material to the user experience design of SMUD educational videos; work with individuals or a team to create digital content; monitor best-in-class digital experiences; share utility trends, anticipate, identify, and resolve problems; plan and organize work to meet changing priorities and deadlines; operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications; prepare clear and concise reports; communicate effectively orally and in writing internally/externally; establish and maintain effective working relationships internally/externally.
