About Energy Procurement Management (EPM) Organization

The EPM Organization ensures that SCE customers have enough electricity to meet their needs, through the output of SCE-owned generation plants and the purchase of electricity from independent generators and energy markets. We engage in multi-year contracts from both conventional and renewable generators, and conduct day-ahead and real-time trading to serve our customers’ electricity demands.

Position Overview

The Analytics Systems Advisor will be responsible for working closely with business clients, subject matter experts, IT information architects, data engineers, and other team members to ensure that EPM has the analytics systems necessary to turn data into critical information and knowledge that can be used to make sound business decisions in SCE’s EPM organization. The successful candidate will lead the development of strategies and processes to integrate and optimize the EPM systems used by the energy planning, trading, and contract management groups to transact in the wholesale energy markets and manage SCE’s energy portfolio.

The Analytics Systems Advisor will be a creative thinker who will be responsible for automating business processes and providing analytic systems to support EPM’s data scientists modeling complex analytical problems the using of statistical, data mining and visualization techniques. In addition to advanced technical skills, the individual in this role should be proficient at preparing and integrating large, varied datasets, overseeing the implementation of advanced analytical solutions on an EPM data analytics platform, and communicating results.

The position will work in cross-functional project teams and will report directly to the Principal Manager of EPM Systems and Analytics. The successful candidate will have strong project management skills, extensive knowledge of information technology systems (especially those used for modern data analytics), data modeling and management, and familiarity with big data systems and business process automation.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategy and provide direction for EPM’s analytic systems used by the energy planning, trading, and contract management groups

  • Optimize EPM’s software suite which includes in-house developed systems, COTS products and cloud-based applications and platforms

  • Consult with other experts internally and externally in order to develop business cases to support investment in new systems

  • Participate in or coordinate systems integration projects that perform functions such as: transact in energy markets; manage electricity usage and production data from customer meters, generators and DERs; manage energy contracts; utilize weather data to perform analytical tasks across EPM; and other similar projects

  • Develop interfaces and data pipelines to extract and prepare large data sets from sources such as SCE enterprise data platforms, energy markets, customer meter data, and transmission and distribution SCADA data

  • Manage business process automation projects

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Information Technology, Business or related discipline

  • 7 years of experience in implementing information systems

  • 2 years of experience working with advanced Hadoop-based analytical systems such as Azure, Spark or similar systems

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Information Technology, or related discipline or equivalent experience

  • Experience developing, implementing and integrating IT systems in industry

  • Experience participating in cross-functional project teams

  • Experience in data modeling and knowledge of SQL, XML, ERDs, etc.

  • Ability to learn and apply new technologies for data analytics

  • Experience consulting with clients on the initiation, scoping, development and implementation of data analytics or IT projects

  • Experience with business process automation and robotic automation tools such as the PegaSystems

  • Experience managing cross-functional project teams implementing systems in the utility industry

  • In-depth understanding of IT systems architecture, data engineering, and data management processes

  • Demonstrated experience in IT project management and agile development practices

  • Demonstrated experience providing consulting and advisory services

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
