General Purpose

This position may be filled at the Trainee/Assistant Level or the Journeyman level.

The Assistant Meter and Relay Technician is in training for the position of Journeyman Station Meter and Relay Technician. The Assistant Meter and Relay Technician shall work with and under direction of a Journeyman Station Meter and Relay Technician and shall be allowed a maximum period of two (2) years to complete study materials, examinations, and on-the-job training to qualify as a Journeyman Technician. The Assistant must then pass a qualifying exam for the Journeyman Technician position.

A Journeyman Station Meter and Relay Technician is qualified to install, maintain, adjust, test and repair all substation and generating station meters, relays and control equipment. Must have a working knowledge of all relay and control schemes sufficient to enable him to diagnose and correct troubles on station meters, relays, controls, and remote control equipment.

May work alone or direct the work of an Assistant Station Meter and Relay Technician. When assigned, this position shall work under the direction of a Lead Station Meter and Relay Technician or a Senior Station Meter and Relay Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Installing, commissioning, testing, adjusting, repairing and replacing protection and control equipment used in high voltage generation plants, transmission and distribution substations. This equipment includes but is not limited to electro-mechanical, solid state and microprocessor protection relays, Watt and VAR meters, recording instruments including Sequence of Event Recorders and Digital Fault Recorders, and control equipment for all substation equipment including circuit breakers, motor operated switches, transformers, load tap changers, voltage regulators, capacitor banks and reactors.

  • Using computers extensively to communicate with substation equipment and to operate test gear.

  • Accurately completing maintenance and commissioning forms and submitting them with all test records to the appropriate company departments.

  • Routinely operate substation equipment and perform substation switching and grounding as necessary.

  • Must be able to lift and move heavy objects exceeding 50 pounds.

  • Demonstrate responsibility for tools, computer, test equipment, and vehicles assigned to them.

  • Working conditions of this position include the following:

  • Technicians may work alone or in crews, which may include workers from another trade.

  • Technicians may work under the direction of others or be required to direct the work of others, depending on the work being performed.

  • Work may include adverse weather conditions and/or long hours during emergency conditions or to minimize impact to customers.

  • The technician may be required to work in confined spaces or on elevated platforms, which can include bucket trucks, ladders, scaffolding, and elevated platforms.

  • Work may be near moving mechanical parts, dust, fumes, noise, water, or in close proximity to cables and conductors energized above 600 volts.

Requirements

  • A High School Diploma, GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Successful completion of a required written examination reflective of AC and DC electrical theory. (Material covered in chapters 1-5, 7, 12-14 in Schaum's Outlines of Basic Electricity 2nd edition).

  • A valid driver's license with a good driving record and the ability to acquire a Medical Examiner's Certificate.

  • Ability to understand and comply with company policies and procedures.

  • Ability to follow safety rules and use PPE's appropriate for work being performed.

  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Preferences

  • Experience in electrical construction or maintenance in commercial or industrial settings.

  • Experience in installation and troubleshooting of motor controls and process instrumentation.

  • Working knowledge of AC and DC electrical theory.

  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair electrical installations safely and effectively.

  • Knowledge of and the ability to safely use hand tools such as screwdrivers, plyers, wrenches, sockets and tape measures.

  • Knowledge of and the ability to safely use power tools such as drills, grinders, saws, heat guns, and soldering irons.

  • Knowledge of and the ability to safely use electrical test equipment such as volt meters, amp meters, ohm meters, Meggers and power quality analyzers.

  • Ability to read, understand and use electrical schematics.

  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals.

  • Basic knowledge of computers and ability to use programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet Explorer.

  • PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.

  • A state-issued Journeyman Electrician's license.

  • A college or trade school degree or certificate in the electrical field with applicable hands-on experience.

  • Military experience in the electrical field with applicable hands-on experience.

  • Experience in the electrical utility industry or applicable high-voltage experience.

  • Department of Motor Vehicles CMV (Medical Card)
