The Framatome Fuel Business Group:

The Fuel Business Group combines activities associated with the conversion and enrichment of uranium and with the design and fuel production for nuclear reactors. The production capacities of the Group, one of the world's leaders in the sector, are undergoing modernization.

BWR neutronics engineers are involved in developing nuclear fuel and core designs and analysis methods, establishing mechanical and fuel design safety limits, including evaluation of critical heat flux during normal operation and transient events, and developing neutronic and thermal-hydraulic code inputs and methods to support the fuel reload analyses and plant operations.

The Richland Thermal Hydraulics department is responsible for supporting the licensing and operation of Framatome fuels in commercial reactors. The department develops steady-state, transient and accident methodologies, and computer codes and applies them to the licensing of BWR fuel. The department also supports the design and development of advanced fuel designs and supports developing solutions for emerging industry issues.

Richland Neutronics and Thermal Hydraulics departments commonly interact with peer departments in other regions of the world (Virginia, France and Germany).

Job Description:

Framatome is seeking anEngineer IV - Advisory Engineer for our BWR Neutronics and Thermal Hydraulics departments in Richland, WA.

Responsibilities and duties may include:

  • Assist with the design and licensing analyses of BWR fuel reloads.

  • Work as part of a team that includes engineers from other departments and Codes and Methods development engineers as well as Project Managers responsible for different BWR fuel reload customers.

  • Interface with and interaction with BWR customers usually starts as soon as basic reload design and analysis engineering capabilities have been established.

  • Typical tasks include fuel and core design, reload safety analysis of reload designs, authoring and review of various design and reload licensing reports and documents, and review of engineering work performed by other team members.

  • Reload design and analysis engineers work together with Codes and Methods development engineers to continue improvement and maintenance of methods and automation tools.

  • Support development of neutronics and thermal hydraulics computer codes and methods to be used by Framatome application engineers and external customers to perform reactor analyses. These reactor analyses are performed to demonstrate compliance with safety limits and to define cost effective fuel management plans.

  • Utilize knowledge of reactor physics and thermal hydraulics, computer programming, and computer operating systems to provide technical expertise in the implementation and maintenance of reactor physics and thermal hydraulics methodologies.

  • Critical evaluation of current methodologies and the development of replacement methodologies, including 3-D reactor simulators, spectral analysis codes, thermal hydraulics codes, and methods.

  • Prepare Licensing Topical Reports (LTRs) for developed neutronics and thermal hydraulics methods, and interact with NRC and licensing authorities to obtain approval for use of the methods.

  • Maintenance of the current BWR reload methods, maintenance of engineering automation systems, and the development of state of the art next generation BWR reload analysis methods.

  • Qualified candidates may be asked to assume supervisory responsibilities.

  • All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this opportunity. Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position . *

  • Engineer IV: BS in Nuclear Engineering plus 5-7 years experience reactor physics or fuel management engineering experience. An advanced engineering degree may be substituted for related work experience (MS 1-2 yrs. or PhD 1-3 yrs.)

  • Principal Engineer: BS in Nuclear Engineering plus 7-10 years experience reactor physics or fuel management engineering experience. An advanced engineering degree may be substituted for related work experience (MS 1-2 yrs. or PhD 1-3 yrs.)

  • Advisory Engineer: BS in Nuclear Engineering plus 12 years experience reactor physics or fuel management engineering experience. An advanced engineering degree may be substituted for related work experience (MS 1-2 yrs. or PhD 1-3 yrs.)

  • Experience and capabilities with MICROSOFT Office software products (WORD, EXCEL, etc.).

  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must have a pro-active approach to problem identification and resolution .

  • Must have ability and attitude to learn a variety of new procedures, processes, and tools, while maintaining various stages of production.

  • Must be able to work well in a fast-paced team environment.

  • Candidates for a Supervisor position must be able to oversee and lead teams.

The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position.

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) is a plus but not a strict requirement.

  • Work experience in the areas of neutronics/physics and/or thermal hydraulics design of nuclear fuel assemblies and core reloads.

  • Maintenance of the current BWR reload methods, maintenance of engineering automation systems, and the development of state of the art next generation BWR reload analysis methods.

  • Experience with nuclear fuel neutronics analysis spectral/lattice codes (CASMO-3, CASMO-4, etc) and core simulator codes (SIMULATE, MICROBURN-B2, etc).

  • Experience with reactor thermal hydraulics analysis codes (RAMONA, RELAP-5, etc.)

  • French, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and/or German language.

  • Experience in Lean Six Sigma product/process development in design and engineering.

  • Experience working with engineering workstation computers and LINUX and/or UNIX operating environments.

  • Computer programming/software capabilities and experience in FORTRAN, C/C , SMALLTALK.

  • Supervision and leadership experience and training.

Sporadic (2%) domestic travel. Travel requirement can vary widely depending on the position, experience level, and which BWR customers the employee is working with.
