SALARY RANGE : $77,250 - $100,470

Base salary is determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.

LOCATION : Rapid City, SD

PRIMARY FUNCTION :

Provide day to day supervision of substation maintenance and construction crews with their job responsibilities including overall coordination of maintenance, installation and testing activities as it relates to the electrical and mechanical equipment associated with substation and line operations. Includes but is not limited to transformers, arrestors, circuit breakers, regulators, capacitor banks, reactor banks, reclosers, disconnect devices, controls, batteries, buildings and grounds. Plan and manage resources for construction in capital improvement and additional projects, including panel construction, equipment installation, wiring, testing and related activities.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP : Substation Maintenance Manager

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

  • Instruct and ensure all crew members complete work in accordance with the Company’s established construction standards and practices.

  • Schedule work activities in a fair manner while leveraging the strengths/abilities of team members.

  • Support and lead project planning by setting up equipment and material requirements.

  • Support and lead continuous improvement efforts that directly impact the substation maintenance group.

  • Support, develop and lead safety initiatives and address safety concerns within the workgroup. This includes JHAs, safety audits, and safety processes/programs.

  • Communicate work status, concerns, or questions on projects and equipment issues to involved parties.

  • Support development of team members through job assignments and training opportunities.

  • Support crews with testing of all equipment including, but not limited to: AC and DC insulation testing, High Current Low Resistance Testing, high current trip/reclosing testing, transformer ratio testing, dissolved gas in oil sampling, oil quality testing, contact/connection resistance testing, circuit breaker motion analysis, SF6 gas moisture testing, SF6 Corrosive Sulfur Testing, battery and strap impedance, specific gravity testing, electronic control testing and DOBLE power factor testing and excitation.

  • Ensure compliance with NERC requirements according to the BHC Protection System Maintenance Program and other applicable policies.

  • Submit switch order requests for scheduled work in accordance with applicable Company policies.

  • Support crews with emergency response and troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical equipment and control problems.

  • Responsible for record keeping and documentation (electronic and hardcopy) of all maintenance and emergency response assignments. Provide and interpret reports as requested.

  • Ensure compliance with all maintenance programs, installation standards and work procedures established by the Company.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS :

  • Maintain effective working relationships with reporting manager, engineers, control technicians, electricians, contractor crews, and utilities leadership team.

  • Establish professional relationships and work effectively with other departments, utilities, contractors, vendors, consultants and government agencies.

EXPERIENCE :

  • Three years of electrical engineering or other relevant experience preferred.

  • Experience with substation equipment and associated maintenance preferred.

  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or other relevant area preferred.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code, power system safety standards and safe clearance procedures.

  • Good working knowledge of electrical substations and associated equipment.

  • Knowledge of control systems.

  • Working knowledge of NERC reliability compliance standards.

  • Understanding of hydraulic, mechanical and pneumatics systems.

SKILLS/ABILITY/OTHER CHARACTERISTICS :

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite - Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook.

  • Ability to learn and maintain proficiency with new systems and software as technology evolves.

  • Skills in leadership and participation in cross functional utility teams.

  • Strong ability to document and track projects and work goals.

  • Ability to coordinate and direct the work of technicians, maintenance personnel and consulting engineers assigned to the projects.

  • Proficiency in reading complex electrical and or mechanical drawings and schematics.

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and make revisions as necessary.

  • Ability to interpret manufacturers’ equipment manuals.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Requires travel within the utility service territory and for support of corporate subsidiaries.

  • Perform and supervise work on or in close proximity to energized electrical facilities.
