The Transmission Outage Coordinator is an integral part of the Energy Control Center organization, which is comprised of system operators and operations support personnel, to manage the Bulk Electric System in a safe and reliable manner. The Transmission Outage Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to collaborate with Transmission Construction, Maintenance, Relay and Neighboring Entity Transmission Outage Coordinators to coordinate outages on the Bulk Electric System while maintaining system integrity.

The Transmission Outage Coordinator participates in Transmission Project Management team meetings to provide guidance to avoid conflicting outages, identify bulk electric system constraints, and provide information to better plan outage requirements.

The Transmission Outage Coordinator evaluates disabling relay protection requests from Construction, Maintenance, and Relay organizations to mitigate risks to the bulk electric system. This position provides technical support to the system operators at the Energy Control Center to assist with real-time outage activities.

This position also collaborates with Transmission Engineering, as necessary, to resolve operational and outage planning issues.

The following is a summary of the majority of tasks expected to be performed by this position:

Coordinate outages to ensure safe and reliable operations

Provide technical support to the real-time system operators on transmission line, relay, and substation equipment

Coordinate outage requirements between Duke Energy Progress and neighboring utilities

Develop switching procedures for planned outage requests and emergent outage requests

Evaluate and make recommendations on disabling relay protection requests

Manage the Transmission Outage Application Tool

Coordinate with the Reliability Engineer on planning and scheduling outages

Provide back-up responsibilities for the Reliability Engineer to perform system studies for planned outages

Participate and provide System Operations guidance in the risk management process

Major Responsibilities

Coordinate outages on the Bulk Power System

Develop switching procedures for planned outages

Provide technical expertise to real-time system operators

Manage the Transmission Outage Application Tool

Evaluate and manage disabling relay protection

Provide technical expertise in the risk management process

Perform reliability studies for assessing transmission equipment outages

Basic Qualifications

Either 6+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 8+ years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 12+ years equivalent experience without a degree.

Preferred Qualifications

4+ years of System Protection and Control field experience

Expert working knowledge of the transmission systems & associated safety policies, practices, and work procedures
