Position summary:

This position has the option to be based in the 526 S. Church St. building in Charlotte, NC in the NCRH building in Raleigh, NC or out of an Operations Center.

Senior Engineer:

The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve.

Reporting Relationships:

This role does not have direct reports but has the responsibility of training and developing junior engineers.

Nature of the Job:

  • Tasks are straightforward, routine and often repetitive

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities

  • Conducts engineering and related studies to prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches with limited guidance

  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance of self and junior engineers

  • Works as One to develop and promote positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities within group and cross work-group boundaries

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Maintains accurate records and files

  • Participates in other assigned duties during emergency or storm events

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Specific responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, while also being able to operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems

  • Provides designs that adhere to relevant safety, environmental, and engineering guidelines

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of engineering; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondences, documentations, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.

  • Coordinates with field engineering, customer liaisons, EHS, Program Development and Governance, construction departments and others to ensure that projects are cost effective and completed on time

  • Performs SPCC calculations, analyzes oil filled equipment, and prepares reports for sealing.

  • Creates construction drawings for foundations including the design of oil containing foundations for regulators

  • Develops SPCC drawings using current Duke standards and creates SPCC reports/plans.

  • Provides berm calculations and constructible solutions to prevent a berm breach in the event of an oil spill.

  • Supports positive customer experiences through timely completion of design requests

  • Provides construction support and solutions. After construction, inspects newly installed oil water separator and oil containing regulator foundations.

  • Supervises the compliance and recordkeeping system of the SPCC plans, Centralized Design D-D Substation SharePoint and FileNet/Content Navigator, one of Duke Energy's data management tools used to track and ensure regulatory compliance and houses various environmental documents.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Minimum 5 years of engineering experience

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E)

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience in the utility industry

  • Ability to use AutoCAD Civil 3D or other engineering related software to produce site development drawings and prepare associated stormwater/hydrologic support data and calculations for project permitting.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

Working Conditions:

  • Corporate office or Operation Center

  • Frequent Field Visits

Specific Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Travel Requirements

  • 50 – 75%

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles

  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations,

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficient in principles of project management

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE)

  • Experience in the utility industry
