Senior Principal Safety Specialist

Job Function Summary

In this role, you are responsible for accelerating and reinforcing the safety culture transformation of Our Safety through multi-dimensional relationships. Your expertise and credibility is essential to be the trusted ambassador of safety, and a translator of the customer-centric business strategy and the customer-centric operational practices. Your demonstrated leadership will accelerate change with and through people, up level our collective safety performance, and drive overall strategy.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting and Analysis

  • Provides expert guidance and oversees investigations in collaboration with managers and other staff.

  • Ensures reporting utilizes best practices for tracking, review and analyzes of data.

  • Ensures cross-functional integration of action items resulting from investigatory reports and/or data and trend analysis.

  • Leads strategy for predictive analytics to develop new programs or initiatives.

Program Management

  • Provides expert guidance in the design enterprise-wide safety program and initiatives implementation.

  • As a recognized expert, advances and ensures a learning culture making every day safer; fosters active relationships with business units to facilitate the program and initiatives.

  • Recommends or develops innovative safety programs to meet business objectives and comply with all relevant state and/or federal laws and regulations.

  • Integrates industry best practices into existing programs.

  • Collaborates with other areas to ensure program alignment.

Consultation/Education

  • Expert facilitation and proactive communication of relevant information to employees, managers and other departments.

  • Strategically integrates business needs and leads collaborative efforts with other departments to deliver business safety solutions aligned to industry best practices.

  • In collaboration with other departments, develops and implements safety educational strategy for employee and/or public safety.

  • Leads the design and delivery of safety educational programs and materials.

Special Projects

  • Collaborates with other departments to identify and initiate special projects to meet corporate objectives engaging cross-functionally.

  • Leads meetings and/or specialty teams to implement projects or initiatives.

  • Depending on position, may assume leadership roles in emergency response up to and including incident command.

Compliance

  • May provide formal written commentary to regulators on proposed regulations.

  • Develops strategy for regulatory and compliance reporting.

  • In collaboration with Legal Services, responds to questions from regulators and serves as an expert for safety-related regulator inquiries and communications.

  • Ensures all projects and initiatives comply with applicable laws and regulations.

Education/Experience/Certifications:

Education: Requires a bachelor’s degree in business, economics, engineering or related financial or scientific discipline or equivalent experience.

Experience: Typically 12 or more years in utility or similar operational experience in the area(s) of safety, leadership, training, emergency management, strategic planning or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications, Licenses and Training

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP),

  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP),

  • Construction Safety & Health Technician (CHST),

  • Occupational Health & Safety Technologist (OHST),

  • Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), or

  • Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS)

  • Journeyman card or equivalent trade or operator qualification and/or ergonomic certification is a plus.

  • Lifting/pushing/pulling/carrying up to 10 lb

  • Walking on unstable surfaces requiring balance including:

  • Elevated areas (i.e., catwalks, roofs and high buildings)

  • Walking distances and surfaces (long distances and over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces)

  • Stairs (over 10 steps)

  • Ladders (over 10 rungs)
