R1017 – IT Project Manager / Senior IT Project Manager – IT Infrastructure

As an IT Project Manager, you will manage all aspects of IT projects/teams, typically involving multiple disciplines in the IT function. You will utilize your expertise and leadership skills to direct staff and resolve issues to ensure project/team goals and requirements are met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Management - Defines, documents and carries out small projects or subprojects (typically less than six months with limited budget, limited interdependency with other projects and no significant strategic impact), alone or with a small team, actively participating in all phases. Identifies, assesses and manages risks to the success of the project. Agrees on project approach with stakeholders and prepares realistic plans (including quality, risk and communications plans) and tracks activities against the project schedule, managing stakeholder involvement as appropriate. Monitors costs, timescales and resources used and takes action where these deviate from agreed tolerances. Ensures that own projects are formally closed and, where appropriate, subsequently reviewed and that lessons learned are recorded

  • Portfolio, Program and Project Support - Takes responsibility for the provision of support services to projects. Uses and recommends project control solutions for planning, scheduling and tracking projects. Sets up and provides detailed guidance on project management software, procedures, processes, tools and techniques. Supports program or project control boards, project assurance teams and quality review meetings. Provides basic guidance on individual project proposals. May be involved in aspects of supporting a program by providing a cross-program view on risk, change, quality, finance or configuration management.

  • Methods and Tools: Promotes and ensures use of appropriate techniques, methodologies and tools.

  • Data Analysis - Investigates corporate data requirements and applies data analysis, data modelling and quality assurance techniques to establish, modify or maintain data structures and their associated components (entity descriptions, relationship descriptions, attribute definitions). Provides advice and guidance to database designers and others using the data structures and associated components

  • Financial Management - Monitors and maintains all required financial records for compliance and audit to all agreed requirements. Assists all other areas of IT with their financial tasks, especially in the areas of identification of process, service, project and component costs and the calculation and subsequent reduction of all IT service, project, component and process failures. Contributes to financial planning and budgeting. Collates required financial data and reports for analysis and to facilitate decision-making.

  • Business Process Improvement - Analyzes business processes; identifies alternative solutions, assesses feasibility and recommends new approaches. Contributes to evaluating the factors which must be addressed in the change program. Helps establish requirements for the implementation of changes in the business process.

Education/Experience/Certifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in business, computer science, engineering management or other related field or equivalent experience.

  • Typically, five or more years of experience in the development, implementation and maintenance of large- scale IT systems, with five or more years in a project management role.

  • Experience in an Agile/Scrum software development environment highly desired.

  • Technical infrastructure experience implementing and managing large scale (preferably back end/core) compute, network, and other strategically important infrastructure related projects.

  • Working knowledge of cloud computing environments (GCP, AWS, Azure) and associated service capabilities.

  • Experience planning and executing physical equipment and overall infrastructure deployments (i.e. data center, MDF, IDF).

  • Certifications, Licenses and Training PMI Project Management Professional (PMP), PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP), Certified Scrum Master (CSM)

Senior IT Project Manager

Requires specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise. Interprets internal or external business issues and recommends best practices. Solves complex problems; takes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. Works independently, with guidance in only the most complex situations May lead functional teams or projects

Key Job Information

  • Project Management - Takes full responsibility for the definition, approach, facilitation and satisfactory completion of medium-scale projects (typically with direct business impact and firm deadlines). Identifies, assesses and manages risks to the success of the project. Ensures that realistic project plans are maintained and ensures regular and accurate communication to stakeholders, consistent with the methods in use. (Agile, waterfall, etc.) Ensures quality reviews occur on schedule and according to procedure. Manages the change control procedure and ensures that project deliverables are completed within agreed cost, timescale and resource budgets and are signed off. Provides effective leadership to the project team and takes appropriate action where team performance deviates from agreed tolerances.

  • Portfolio, Program and Project Support - Takes responsibility for the provision of portfolio, program and project support. Advises on the available standards, procedures, methods, tools and techniques. Evaluates project and/or program performance and recommends changes where necessary. Contributes to reviews and audits of project and program management to ensure conformance to standards.

  • Methods and Tools - Promotes and ensures use of appropriate techniques, methodologies and tools.

  • Data Analysis - Sets standards for data analysis tools and techniques, advises on their application and ensures compliance. Manages the investigation of corporate data requirements and coordinates the application of data analysis and data modelling techniques, based upon a detailed understanding of the corporate information requirements, in order to establish, modify or maintain data structures and their associated components (entity descriptions, relationship descriptions, attribute definitions).

  • Financial Management - Advises on financial planning and budgeting. Develops financial plans and forecasts. Monitors and manages IT expenditure, ensuring that all IT financial targets are met, and examining any areas where budgets and expenditure exceed their agreed tolerances. Assists with the definition and operation of effective financial control and decision-making, especially in the areas of service, projects and component cost models and the allocation and apportionment of all incurred IT costs. Analyzes actual expenditure, explains variances and advises on options in use of available budget.

  • Business Process Improvement - Analyzes business processes, identifies alternative solutions, assesses feasibility and recommends new approaches, typically seeking to exploit technology components. Evaluates the financial, cultural, technological, organizational and environmental factors which must be addressed in the change program. Establishes client requirements for the implementation of significant changes in organizational mission, business functions and process, organizational roles and responsibilities and scope or nature of service delivery.

  • Portfolio Management - Ensures that program/project leads and/or service owners adhere to the agreed portfolio management approach and timetable and that they provide the appropriate information to agreed targets of timelines and accuracy. Produces reports as appropriate for portfolio governance, including making recommendations for changes to the portfolio.

  • Systems Development Management – Defines solution development projects which support the organization’s objectives and plans. Ensures that senior management is both aware of and able to provide the required resources. Contributes effectively to improving solution development processes within the organization justified by measurable business benefits. Facilitates availability and optimum utilization of resources, especially in Agile projects. Monitors and reports on the progress of development projects, ensuring that projects are carried out in accordance with agreed standards, methods and procedures (including secure software development). Applies secure development improvement practices.

  • Program Management - Plans, directs and coordinates activities to manage and implement a program from contract/proposal initiation to final operational stage, including the transition into “business as usual”; plans, schedules, monitors and reports on activities related to the program. Ensures that programs are managed to realize business benefits and that program management is informed by an awareness of current technical developments.

Education/Experience/Certifications

  • Intermediate / Advanced knowledge in establishing detailed work plans and staffing needs for each phase of the project. Arrange for the assignment or recruitment of appropriate project personnel.

  • Intermediate / Advanced knowledge of standard project management tools and techniques.

  • Intermediate / Advanced knowledge in developing and updating project plan, schedule, risk management plan, change management plan and communications plan.
