Portland General Electric (PGE) IT & Supply Chain (ITSC) Rotation Development Program - 18 months

What a wonderful time to join PGE! The ITSC Early Career Rotation Development Program is an exciting avenue for enthusiastic, high-potential, early-career individuals to gain experience in different areas of Information Technology and Supply Chain and develop the skills necessary to build your career.

Note: These roles are located in Portland, Oregon. The work will be a hybrid model with some days working from home and some days in the office for in person collaboration opportunities.

Program Details

Information Technology and Supply Chain are integral to business operations. You will work on business projects that directly impact and improve organizational performance while building your business acumen, technical competencies, and leadership skills. In an intensive 18-month program, you’ll experience 2-3 rotations designed to give you a solid foundation and on-the-job experience to enhance your understanding of critical business operations.

You’ll see PGE from various perspectives while building stronger networks and gaining a better understanding of how the company functions. Your assignments may involve project management, client-facing work, operations, strategy, change management, and technical skills development.

Your rotations could include:

  • Developing architecture and infrastructure to support digital transformation

  • Building innovative self-service solutions that maximize the customer experience

  • Partnering with business teams to develop and deploy transformative technology solutions to provide the best products and services to our customers

  • Working on emerging technologies and using innovative techniques that are shaping the future

  • Solving complex business and technology problems by providing simple, creative, innovative, and cost-effective solutions

You will participate in development classes, as well as formal mentoring relationships and peer feedback – all of which will enhance your core competencies and improve interpersonal proficiencies.

Who Can Participate?

To be eligible for PGE's Early Career Rotation program, you must be at least 18 years old and have met one of the following criteria:

  • A graduate of a high school senior that has enrolled in a college or trade school in an IT related field OR

  • A recent 2021 college graduate with an IT-related degree OR

  • 1 year in an IT related field (programming, networking, systems/business analysis, IT security, or related)

We are looking for early career individuals and encourage those who may have just completed their degree or have a track record of strong performance in previous positions or internships to apply. Ideal candidates should be eager to learn and possess a sincere interest in growing their careers.

This is a job that could last up to 18 months, depending on business need and job performance. After you complete the rotation program, you will be encouraged to apply for full-time employment or other employment opportunities at PGE.

Rotations

There are multiple areas in Information Technology and Supply Chain where Program members may rotate. Decisions on where members rotate will be made during their onboarding process and will match a member’s career interest mixed with meeting business needs. The following is a high-level description of the roles where a member may be placed.

Business Analyst

The entry level business analyst role is designed to help plan, develop, and launch efficient information systems and operations systems in support of core organizational functions. Using both business and technical skills, the business analyst will work directly with customers to identify business requirements with enough detail and clarity to include in proposals for solutions. The individual will apply proven communication, analytical and problem-solving skills to help identify and resolve systems issues to maximize the benefit of IT systems investments. The Business Analyst role can be in several different functional areas like Grid Operations or Customer.

Technology COE - Infrastructure

One of area where members could rotate is IT Systems Architecture and Integration. Members would be on a team connected to enterprise-wide standards and processes and connected to the implementation and delivery of PGE’s IT infrastructure systems. Members would be involved with Fitness process improvements focused on standardizing the automation of network systems and Vulnerabilities process improvements focused on working with Cybersecurity to refine the evaluation process. Members may also work on Data Center migration. Members will gain experience in technical project methods, automation tools, Network and Server Technologies, Cloud Infrastructure Build, Maintenance technologies.

Cybersecurity

Members may also rotate into Cybersecurity and spend time with Risk Management and/or the Integrated Security Operations Center (ISOC). In Risk Management members will get experience working with information systems and maintaining cybersecurity with hardware, firmware, and software. They will learn how to identify and analyze security risks and exposures and learn how to develop policies and procedures to prevent unauthorized access.

Project Coordinator

The project coordinator defines, documents, and carries out small projects or subprojects (typically less than six months with limited budget and limited interdependency with other projects). He/she may work alone or with a small team, actively participating in all phases of the project management life cycle. Identifies, assesses, and manages risks to the success of the project; agrees on project approach with stakeholders and prepares realistic plans including quality, risk, and communications plans; tracks activities against the project schedule and manages stakeholder involvement as appropriate; monitors costs, timescales and resources used and takes action where these deviate from agreed tolerances; ensures projects are formally closed and, where appropriate, subsequently reviewed; and that lessons learned are recorded.

Developer

Developers will design, code, and test moderately complex programs and scripts while collaborating with others in reviews of specifications as appropriate. You can expect an exciting, cutting edge, and challenging environment where you will quickly acquire a wide range of skills including API, data strategy, and analytics. One possible rotation track is Sales and Marketing in the Customer Service organization where you will gain experience assessing user interfaces and building physical designs. Use of automation tools will allow you to identify opportunities to automate different customer programs and services. Additionally, you will spend time learning about how to build applications with a focus on the end customer experience.

This rotation does require basic programming skills acquired through actual work experience and/or successful completion of programming classes .
