General Purpose

Negotiates sales and purchases of wholesale power, transmission and financial instruments, consistent with the strategic direction of the Company. Identifies sales/purchase opportunities and aggressively negotiates energy sales and purchases with other utilities/organizations and/or financial institutions. Develops professional relationships with wholesale power marketers, traders, brokers, and the financial community to enhance the Company’s ability to profitably grow the wholesale power business.

Responsibilities

  • Sell or purchase energy, to balance current system load and resource requirements.

  • Collaborate with other real-time traders to optimize available generation assets such as thermal, hydro and wind.

  • Negotiate the sale or purchase of power within the day to maximize profitability and utilization of resources.

  • Collaborate with resource management, forward and gas trading to develop the most efficient operating strategy.

  • Monitor the dispatch of the Company’s generating assets on an hourly basis.

  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with wholesale power marketers, traders, brokers, and the financial community.

In addition to the above, the responsibilities of the Mid-Level Energy Transaction Trader include the following:

  • Develop an hourly generation strategy to balance Company’s load and resource position.

  • Purchase energy, electric, and/or gas to meet current system load requirements.

  • Analyze and evaluate moderately complex energy transactions to ensure that all relevant aspects including energy price, GHG charges, congestion revenues, transmission utilization, counter party and contractual terms are favorable to and consistent with company guidelines for risk management.

  • Develop short term trading strategies to increase corporate margin through optimization of the Company's portfolio of generating assets within bilateral and ISO markets.

  • Assist with the management of outages and communication of moderately complex dispatch instructions to PacifiCorp generation plants.

  • Provide post-operational analysis to improve performance.

  • Interpret and validate moderately complex model outputs.

  • Provide direction to associate-level traders.

In addition to the above, the responsibilities of the Senior Energy Transaction Trader include the following:

  • Manage outages and communicate complex dispatch instructions to PacifiCorp generation plants.

  • Act as the subject matter expert in this discipline and provide direction to associate and career level traders.

  • Analyze and evaluate complex energy transactions to ensure that all relevant aspects including energy price, transmission, counter party and contractual terms are favorable to and consistent with company guidelines for risk management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics, Marketing or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Analysis skills in order to understand market conditions and to identify sales/purchase opportunities.

  • Negotiating skills in order to identify, negotiate, and close on sales and purchase opportunities.

  • Communication and interpersonal skills to develop industry contacts, establish relationships, influence others’ positions and negotiate outcomes.

  • Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools to support trading activity.

  • Understanding of financial modeling, risk assessment, commodity management, electricity and natural gas trading practices.

  • Position work hours are non-standard.

In addition to the above, the requirements of the Mid-Level Energy Transaction Trader position include the following:

  • A minimum of two to three years’ experience in trading, or one years’ experience in electric utility operations and the applicable NERC certification.

  • Communication and interpersonal skills to develop industry contacts, establish relationships, influence others’ positions and negotiate outcomes.

  • Knowledge of Company policies, procedures, and practices, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel.

In addition to the above, the requirements for the Senior Energy Transaction Trader include the following:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in energy trading.

  • Ability to maintain, configure and develop the tools and displays utilized in performing the function of the PacifiCorp trading and scheduling desks.

  • Demonstrated proficiency at both the PacifiCorp East & West trading desk and the PacifiCorp Scheduling desk.

  • Knowledge of Company policies, procedures, and practices, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations and the demonstrated ability to author and maintain procedures and best practices to be utilized for performing the job function.

Preferences

  • Advanced degree or certification.

  • Data Base proficiency.

  • Visual Basic Proficiency.

  • Advanced knowledge of non-standard over-the-counter options/financial products.

  • Experience in organized ISO/RTO/EIM markets.

  • Experience pricing Congestion Revenue Rights.
