Portland General Electric (PGE) is a vertically-integrated electric utility engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution, and retail sale of electricity in the state of Oregon. The Company participates in wholesale markets by purchasing and selling electricity and natural gas in an effort to meet the needs of its retail customers. PGE has a diverse power supply portfolio, which includes power generation (e.g., hydro, wind, solar, natural gas), long term contracts, wholesale market purchases and sales, financial derivatives, and transmission contracts. PGE’s Power Operations Group is responsible for managing the commodity price volatility within the net variable power costs on behalf of PGE’s customers.
Energy Trading, Internal Audit
This is a new position on the Internal Audit Services team. In this position, you will focus on delivering a risk-based audit plan concentrated on energy trading and related risk management activities. You will work closely with the Internal Audit team to develop, plan and execute risk-based audits and consults to assess operational effectiveness and compliance with laws, regulations, policies, procedures and standards. We are looking for someone with experience in energy trading and risk management. Experience in Western United States energy markets is highly desired. Experience in Internal Audit a plus, but not required.
Typical responsibilities include:
Perform the planning and fieldwork of basic to complex audits and consultations through gathering and analyzing information, performing more complex research, and efficiently and effectively documenting work in support of reporting.
Write clear, concise and progressive basic to complex audit and consultation reports making risk reduction and/or process improvement recommendations; participates in client updates on risk mitigation activities and reporting. Evaluate Power Operations trading and portfolio management activities to assess compliance with PGE’s trading risk policies and limits including assessment of the effectiveness of risk management controls, such as deal capture, confirmations, risk reports, and escalation procedures
Communicate conclusions to clients.
Gathers and analyzes information, utilizing key client contacts, for assessing enterprise risks in development of the annual audit plan and ongoing reporting to company leadership and the Audit Committee.
Performs a variety of individual and department administrative tasks and implements process improvement initiatives.
Required skills and experience include:
Experience in energy trading and risk management. Experience in Western United States energy markets is highly desired.
Knowledge of portfolio management principles including financial derivatives.
Strong communication skills; verbal and written.
Ability to learn and understand changing technologies.
The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, economics, finance, computer science, liberal arts or other related field or equivalent experience and five or more years in wholesale energy trading, risk management, business, internal auditing, public accounting or related functions. CPA, CIA, CRMA, CFE, or CFA certifications a plus.
