About Transmission and Distribution
Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organization (T&D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s5 million customer accounts.
This position is for an Engineer 3 in the Substation Apparatus Engineering – Reactive Devices and FACTS Group. This group leads special apparatus projects, which include static VAR compensators (SVC), series capacitors, synchronous condensers, and gas insulated switchgear (GIS), as well as shunt capacitors, grounding, arresters, and other substation equipment. Apparatus engineers provide technical leadership at all stages of these projects from specification, qualification, bid evaluation, project execution, acceptance, and on-going support for operations and maintenance through the equipment lifetime. In addition, the FACTS group executes, reviews, and supports a variety of modeling and simulation studies to ensure adequate grounding, insulation coordination, TRV withstand, control settings, and other investigations as needed.
The Engineer 3 position will be responsible for various equipment and major FACTS projects, such as shunt capacitor, static VAR compensator (SVC), synchronous condenser, and/or series capacitor. In addition to providing technical leadership within SCE, this position is also responsible to work with manufacturers and external studies contractors.
Substation Apparatus Engineering is in the Engineering & Technical Services (E&TS) Group within Southern California Edison (SCE)'s Transmission & Distribution Business Unit (TDBU).
Managing various new, existing, and pilot projects and studies as the primary responsible apparatus engineer and supporting other projects, engineers, and initiatives as a subject matter expert.
Supporting project scoping, technical justification, cost and layout estimates.
Working with stakeholders throughout SCE to understand system needs, concerns, training, and interface requirements.
Ability to communicate on technical and non-technical topics
Leading design and drawing reviews.
Maintaining internal documentation and standards.
Reviewing drawings, internal/external studies and manufacturer test reports.
Responding to emergent field issues and requests for information on equipment, studies, and FACTS projects.
Attending and providing technical input during factory qualification visits, factory witness tests, and site acceptance testing activities.
Performing power systems transient analysis using EMTP software (PSCAD).
Performing other duties and responsibilities as required.
Travel required: 10-15% plus local travel in Southern California.
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related technical discipline.
Five years of engineering experience
Three years of experience with apparatus, system planning, protection & controls, and/or commissioning & testing.
Master's Degree in Engineering or related technical discipline.
Professional Engineering (PE) License
Experience with power electronics or FACTS.
Experience with PSCAD, CAPE, PSLF, and/or CDEGS software.
Demonstrated experience working with multi-disciplinary teams of both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work directly as employees for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.
Must be willing to travel to SCE territories in SOCAL
