Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 15 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.
The Senior Protection and Control Engineer will be a key member of the Protection & Control/Meter Strategies team providing technical expertise and support to Protection Asset Engineering, Control/Meter Asset Engineering, Protection Execution & Substation Design Engineering personnel and other internal and external stakeholders. This position provides technical leadership, consultation, and hands-on support to ensure that SCE’s protection & control/meter strategies -related protection and control asset management, substation automation project sponsorship, Bulk-power and sub-transmission relay replacement project sponsorships, design standards, distribution protection and controls and technical reference materials, work processes and procedures, and develop tools to meet the evolving needs of the Protection & Control/Meter teams and key stakeholders. The Senior Protection and Control Engineer will be expected to make significant contributions towards realizing Protection & Control/Meter Engineering’s vision to provide asset management strategies and technical expertise/integration from transmission to distribution in the area of protection and controls.
Lead the identification, development, and documentation of new and/or modified protection and/or control-related design standards and requirements to meet emerging technical challenges on the SCE grid
Lead/support innovative solutions to Distributed Energy Resources (DER) integration, Micro Grid design, and Distribution protection/controls.
Provide ad hoc technical consultation and support to help resolve novel or complex protection/controls-related issues on the SCE grid
Provide asset recommendation for various types of relaying schemes for Transmission, Sub transmission, and Distribution systems.
Develop and design electronic calculation sheets/applications for streamlining Protection & Control Execution work process
Analyze relay events/system disturbances on Transmission/Distribution to determine the root cause, corrective action plan of relay operations, and advice a system/scheme corrective action.
Provide technical consultation and support in creating standards in Protection Automaton area (Remote Terminal Unit (RTU), Human Machine Interface (HMI), Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Substation Equipment Modeling Tool (SEMT), Node Category Standards, etc.)
Provide project sponsorship guidance in the area of Protection and Controls, work with Power System Operators, Program Engineers, Design Engineers, Protection Execution to integrate Capital Projects.
Develop and maintain SCE protection-related technical documentation and reference materials (e.g., protection philosophy documents, relay setting guidelines, relay application notes, internal work control procedures, etc.)
Provide ad hoc technical consultation and support on design/document for distribution protection and controls process and procedures.
Lead/Support Protection & Control/Meter Strategies team on all pilots/demonstration project to drive innovation in the area on Distribution Protection and Control (Distribution Fault Anticipator (DFA), Fault Location Identification and System Restoration (FLISR), Early Fault Detection (EFD), High Impedance detection (Hi-Z), Grid Management System (GMS), Microgrid).
Represent Protection & Control/Meter Strategies Team on selected internal technical committees (e.g., Line & Bus Committee, Substation Standards Review Team, Protection Technical Forum, etc.)
Represent Protection & Control/Meter Strategies Team on selected industry technical committees and working groups (e.g., Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) Relay Work Group, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power System Relaying Committee, North American Transmission Forum (NATF) System Protection Practices Group, etc.)
Support in all technical aspects involving Protection & Control/Meter Strategies Team roles/responsibilities
Collaborate with T&D Apparatus & Linear Strategies, Protection Execution, Test & Technology, Grid Operations, Substation Construction & Maintenance, Telecom Engineering, and other internal partners to identify and implement process improvements
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Nine or more years of engineering experience.
Six or more years of Protection Engineering experience.
Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Licensed Professional Engineer.
Project Management certification.
Ten years or more of experience working in a Protection Engineering organization.
Familiarity with SCE system protection practices, philosophies, and standards.
Experience using Advanced Systems for Power Engineering (ASPEN) relay database, Computer Aided Protection Engineering (CAPE) software, and AutoCAD.
Experience interpreting and/or designing electrical one-line, elementary, and protection/control logic diagrams.
Familiarity with SCE substation design standards.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work directly as employees for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.
Position will require up to 15% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.
Relocation does not apply to this position.
This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties
