About Transmission and Distribution

Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T&D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.

Position Overview

The Engineer 3 will be a part of our System Planning Coordination group within T&D and will work on high impact programs for determining and leading strategic methods to meet company initiatives with focus on developing SCE’s forecasted 10 year Distribution and Transmission System expansion plan that is filed to the California Public Utilities Commission. You will coordinate and develop methodologies for industry leading technical studies on new and emerging technologies for Distribution and Transmission level impacts. The Engineer 3 will also guide and support engineering teams on executing annual system planning tasks and activities.

Typical Responsibilities :

  • Responsible for providing technical leadership in coordinating the training of 20 or more system planning Engineers on major T&D electric system expansion plan tasks leading up to filing with the Public Utilities Commission.

  • Guiding strategic engineering work streams.

  • Developing Transmission and Distribution expansion plan.

  • Writing General Rate Case testimony.

  • Supporting industry leading System Planning Tool development.

  • Leading technical teams in System Planning Process improvements

  • Provide technical coaching and guidance to other Engineers in the group and in other groups.

  • Coordinate data collection and write technical responses to data requests from regulatory entities on system planning filings.

  • Lead, support, and coordinate development of specialized analysis and studies.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering discipline.

  • Five or more years of Engineering experience.

  • Three or more years of Engineering experience related to Electric Utility Distribution and/or Electric Utility Transmission System Planning.

  • Valid Driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License.

  • Eight or more years of electric distribution and/or transmission system planning principles, tasks, and analyses.

  • Experience performing electric system load flow analyses and design for Utility Distribution, Sub-Transmission, Transmission, and Generation Interconnection Systems.

  • Experience with writing technical papers and supporting documents for regulatory filings.

  • Experience developing and delivering technical presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Software development experience with any object-oriented programming language.

  • Software System implementation experience.


  • Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work directly as employees for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.

  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
