Position Summary

The Health & Safety department is looking for a self-motivated and detail-oriented student to join our team. This position will focus on assisting the staff with a variety of projects in support of health or safety disciplines to achieve compliance with the organization’s standards and with federal, state and local regulatory requirements. This may include conducting investigation of incidents, accidents, injuries, or complaints and recommending improvements to minimize the hazard potential. Assisting in Development of health and safety policy and programs. The student may also be responsible for performing field observations and industrial hygiene sampling at various locations such as power plants or locations across the Duke Energy Service Territory.

This co-op position is for students pursuing degrees in engineering, science, health, safety or other related field of study. This co-op position will be based in the Midwest but may involve work at any one of Duke Energy facilities in Florida, Carolinas, or Midwest.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a four-year degree in health and safety.

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75

  • Second or third year student – If possible (or higher)

  • Valid driver’s license

Desired Qualifications

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a four-year degree in an accredited health and safety program.

  • Previous engineering experience working as an intern or co-op

  • Background in Health and Safety issues is desired.

  • Desire to pursue a career in the energy industry

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated history of achievements and personal performance

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities through effective decision making

  • Works effectively with others from diverse backgrounds to solve problems and implement solutions

  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in use of computers, software, and engineering applications

  • Demonstrated time management skills
