Pike Corporation Designer 1 - Intern in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Position Overview:Provide substation physical design, technical support, and project coordination to Transmission Substation projects for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality design projects. Provide technical competency on complex problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation concepts and designs including all range of voltage substation and switching station, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ability to read and interpret physical designs for utility stations through 500kV, including substation arrangements, sections, and elevations, foundation and grading plans, lighting plans and details, fence plans and details, grounding plans and details, rigid bus designs, strain bus designs, below grade designs to include duct banks and cable trenches, single phase transformer banks, bus and equipment support structures under the direction of a Lead Engineer or Lead Designer

  • Ability to understand the installation of high voltage transformers, group operated disconnect switches, breakers, PTs, CCVTs, line turners, surge arresters, and other equipment within the substation and be able to create/draft sections, details, and overviews with some assistance

  • Ability to understand and create grounding designs under the direction of a Lead Engineer.

  • Ability to interpret written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings

  • Coordinate with the protection and control design team for field equipment requiring electrical connections, and with the civil/structural team for foundations, structures, and drainage

  • Ability to check designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards

  • Ability to collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines

  • Visit sites to solve issues during engineering/construction

    Requirements

  • 0-2 Year(s) experience in CAD 2D and 3D design

  • Proven Autocad and/or Microstation skills
