The Substation Electrical Design Engineer is a high level professional with extensive working knowledge and experience in engineering of high voltage substations with a focus on Protection and Controls design. Responsible for all aspects of relay protection & control engineering involving detailed design or design oversight for Transmission projects through 500kV. Candidate will prepare, provide guidance, or assist in preparing and developing the engineering deliverables such as relay & metering one & three-line diagrams; AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams; control and relaying panel layouts and specifications; control and relaying panel and equipment wiring diagrams; auxiliary system design including batteries and chargers, AC & DC load centers, conduit, and cable sizing. Duties will be focused on newly constructed assets, but could also be called upon to assist with maintenance activities at existing facilities. Candidate must work collaboratively with others in a project team setting to assure designs meet project objectives in a timely and cost-effective manner.
Contributes value (insight based) project deliverables on technical issues to support the overall success of projects.
Capable of completing specialized or highly complex design activities, requiring some interpretation of practices, and an understanding of the operations application.
Provides technical/design status updates and deliverables to the project team in a timely manner to help support overall project success.
Serve as a main point of contact for technical questions and drawing reviews when design work is outsourced to an Engineering firm.
Serves as a technical resource, assisting other individuals and departments in the accomplishment of their duties.
Provide technical support of field personnel during testing and troubleshooting activities.
Understand the integral parts of the particular design and ensure all items are on site and available to meet project schedule.
Establish and revise design philosophy to ensure long term value for the Company. Provide recommendations for process improvements, as necessary.
Provide engineering support to other individuals and departments.
Able to efficiently and effectively deal with more advanced and senior level projects.
Leads technical discussion with customers or peers explaining the issue/problem as well as the decision process behind the solution.
Provides oversight/guidance to coworkers who perform similar design work.
Possesses social and communication skills necessary to integrate into a team, as well as effectively communicate with peers and customers.
Able to take on complex design issues and determine a course of action with minimal oversight.
Able to consider and evaluate decision implications to the company beyond the isolated immediate problem.
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum or with NCESS
5+ years of related experience
PE Certification preferred
AutoCad experience preferred
Ability to negotiate and influence with a consultative approach
Strong knowledge of leading practices for their practice area
Willingness and ability to learn new technologies on the job
Demonstrated ability to communicate complex results to technical and non-technical audiences
Proficient at functioning effectively within a team environment, present ideas and opinions in a respective and collegial manner
