Safety & Administrative Specialist / Safety Training

The Safety and Administrative Specialist acts as the primary administrative person and assistant to the Safety Manager within PGW’s Risk Management Department and performs a wide variety of administrative and technical functions. The specialist provides support so that safety program initiatives are delivered in a timely manner, carefully monitored, properly documented, and promptly reported. The specialist coordinates the creation and maintenance of accurate statistical records of injuries and accidents. The specialist performs ergonomic evaluations of employee office set up, arranges for ergonomic assistive devices, and trains on the proper use of ergonomic devices.

  • Researches, prepares, plans, and provides Safety training and presentations Company-wide, including Field Operations Annual Schools and mandatory safety committee training. Responsible for preparing agendas, minutes, and additional handouts for Managers Safety Committee, Union/Management Safety Committee, and Departmental Safety Committees.

  • Performs the following hands-on training as part of PGW’s Accident and Injury Reduction Program including but not limited to:

  • Safe Driving,

  • Forklift

  • First Aid, CPR/AED

  • Safe Evacuation

  • Office Safety

  • Train the Trainer: ensures that in-house trainers remain in compliance with requirements and certifications, including, but not limited to, CPR and safe driving.

  • Maintains PGW evacuation and emergency manual and associated policies.

  • Possesses HAZWOPER certification and participates in on-site spill emergency response.

  • Performs comprehensive safety audits of Company facilities and worksites.

  • Serves as lead Accountability Coordinator for emergency evacuations of the Montgomery Complex.

  • Responsible for determining the need for Drug and Alcohol testing; participates in “Out of Hours On-Call” rotation.

  • Responsible for monthly tracking of driver’s license verification for Company drivers and notifying affected departments to ensure PGW compliance with Pennsylvania law.

  • Inspects PGW’s emergency Automatic External Defibrillators (AED), and related medical supplies on a monthly basis.

  • Work with Medical Department to address employee ergonomic needs and implement strategies to prevent musculoskeletal work injuries.

  • Provides administrative support for Risk Management, including compiling statistical information about injuries and accidents, monthly reporting on Risk Key Performance Indicators and safety goals.

  • Coordinates safety vendor services including eye protection; establishes positive and productive relationships with vendors and other contacts.

  • Provides support for Company Safety Incentive Program including setting goals, tracking performance, and selecting and procuring awards.

  • Prepares drafts of safety related news articles and Safety & Health bulletins, as directed.

  • Performs other special projects and assignments as requested.

  • Associates Degree in Safety or other related field. Safety certifications preferred.

  • Must have a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license and clean driving record.

  • 2 – 3 years relevant work experience working with workplace safety issues.

  • Must have strong work ethic and s commitment to responsibly handling highly sensitive and confidential information.

  • Must have or be willing to attain the following certifications within 1 year of employment:

  • Basic Life Support (CPR/AED) procedures with the ability to facilitate

  • Instructor certification of PGW’s safe driving program within 1 year of accepting position.

  • HAZWOPER certification

  • Formal training in Ergonomic assessment and remediation practices.

  • Credentials to be deemed an Accident and Illness Service Provider by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry in order to maintain PGW’s self-insurance status

  • Must have mathematical/problem solving skills with the ability to apply learned mathematical skills to business processes in order to process purchase orders, review budget information, etc.

  • Must have verbal and written communications skills ability to build long-term constructive and cooperative working relationships with co-workers, vendors, management and outside agencies.

  • Must have strong administrative and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and work independently.

  • Must have troubleshooting and follow-up skills with the ability to identify problematic situations and resolve.

  • Must have documentation and recordkeeping skills with the ability to compile, review and enter a variety of data manually and electronically and in compliance with corporate policy.

  • Must have a customer-service oriented approach to taking on daily tasks and personal interactions.

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook) and Accounting software such as Oracle, etc.. Ability to learn other software programs as needed.

Residency Requirement: All employees of the Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) must live in the City of Philadelphia for the duration of their employment. If a candidate does not live in the City of Philadelphia at the time of hire, he/she must move into the city within twelve (12) months of his/her hire date.
