Description

This position is part of the System Operations department and is responsible for the real-time, 24x7 operation of the Gulf Power bulk electric system. Responsibilities include managing and directing field personnel in performing switching operations, monitoring and operating the network transmission and sub-transmission systems, and assessing and responding to transmission system trouble. A Power System Coordinator (PSC) has the ultimate responsibility and accountability for the integrity of Gulf Power Company's electrical transmission system by making critical decisions regarding system operations.

The Power System Coordinator position provides reliable service to Gulf Power Company's customers through safe, reliable, and efficient coordination of transmission lines, substations, voltages and all associated equipment during maintenance, construction, and restoration activities. The Coordinator is also accountable for helping to manage the energy accounting balancing of Gulf Power's territorial load on a consistent basis. This position will be filled at our Exempt Level 04, 05, or 06 depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

Job Experience and Education

  • Four-year technical degree, or two-year technical degree and 3 years of Electric Transmission & Distribution (T&D) or Generation experience, or no degree and 5 years of T&D or Generation experience desired;

  • North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) Transmission Operator certification a plus;

  • Experience in a Control Center environment a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Leadership and interpersonal skills are required to work with other professionals and field personnel such as other Power System Coordinators, Engineers, Substation/Transmission Line Technicians, and Management in a team environment.

  • Excellent written and clear and concise oral communication skills to ensure the safety of all personnel and equipment along with a high level of electric transmission system reliability.

  • Working knowledge of electrical theory.

  • Basic knowledge and skills in math and science.

  • Working knowledge of electrical energy flows on an interconnected power grid, protective relays, and the ability to recognize and appropriately respond to voltage and load requirements.

  • Ability to read and understand single line diagrams.

  • Must have comprehensive computer skills (including Excel and Word) in order to utilize numerous computer applications. Experience with computer modeling of electrical power systems preferred.

  • Must be able to handle multiple inputs and tasks at one time, prioritize work and provide leadership during critical system events; incorrect action or inaction could result in system damage, loss of customer load, system disturbances and/or loss of life.

  • Problem solving skills

  • Comfortable with making decisions often with limited input and extreme time constraints.

  • Ability to apply sound reasoning and logic in the analysis of System conditions, identify significant problems, and achieve prompt, effective resolution of these problems.

  • Ability to adapt to the changing technology utilized to monitor and operate the power system.

Other Requirements

  • Job requires shift work on a rotation basis, typically 12 hours, during both night and day shifts. Shifts occur on weekdays and weekends.

  • The successful candidate will need to be capable of working alone and autonomously, although assistance is available when needed.

  • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Standard of Conduct must be signed

  • Successful applicant is required to already have or obtain, within one year of hire date, a NERC Transmission Operator certification before being able to perform operation duties and continue employment. Training is provided to achieve such certification.
