Position Specific Description

Responsible for installing, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing internal communications Networks that include voice (phone), data (computers), network (fiber optic equipment and outside plant), and radio frequency (RF and wireless), microwave, SCADA, and Energy Management System as well as all ancillary systems (HVAC, AC/DC systems, etc.…). These systems are installed, maintained, and repaired in accordance with established standards, service levels, operational processes, and applicable work agreements. Travel is required.

The work of a Communication Technician is performed indoors in a climate-controlled office setting and outdoors with exposure to all seasonal conditions. The worker is required to wear PPE consistent with the nature of the work. All workers are required to wear steel toed safety shoes, eye protection, protective gloves, and protective clothing. Tools and equipment used in this Communications Technician role are include, but are not limited to the following: Company van or truck, fiber optics splicer, RF service monitor, spectrum analyzer , tool pouch, laptop, computer, keyboard, basic office tools, spade/shovel, battery-operated drill, small tools (Dremel), hammers, and bolt cutters. Regular, dependable attendance is an essential function of this position. After hours scheduled and callout as well as storm duty is a requirement of this position.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver’s license

  • Ability to obtain NERC/CIP certification subject to background check

  • Ability to lift and carry 50lbs for up to 100ft

  • Two-year degree (college/technical/vocational) or equivalent experience in electronics, telecommunications and/or computer technology is required.

  • Understanding of the various topologies, e.g. telecommunications, wireless, data and voice networks and how they interface with each other

  • Ability to logically and effectively troubleshoot and repair hardware and software associated with personal computers, peripheral devices, voice systems, data networks, telecommunications systems, and ancillary equipment.

  • Working knowledge of radio communication systems.

  • Knowledge of voice and data wireless systems and troubleshooting techniques.

  • Knowledge of data communications networks.

  • Knowledge of PC hardware, operating systems, and associated peripheral and software components.

  • Must have demonstrated personal computer skills along with a general understanding of corporate applications and standard desktop products

  • Ability to work independently, self –starter with good time management skills.

  • Must have good verbal and written communications skills. Responsible for the installation, maintenance (both reactive and preventive) and project support on the FPL voice, data and telecommunications transport networks

  • Responsible for installing standard, endorsed, or certified off the shelf software and/or hardware devices, and provide minimal onsite training to get the client started.

  • Responsible for participating in 24x7 on-call procedures/operations

  • Responsible for interfacing with and coordination of contractors and/or vendors associated with the Field Operations function as appropriate

  • Responsible for interfacing with the customer and other IT groups related to problems and installations as appropriate.

  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to billing and performance processes and procedures.

  • Responsible for maintaining accurate circuit and equipment inventories and documentation of assigned sites.

    Highly Preferred Qualifications:

  • FCC General Radiotelephone Operators License or equivalent license for radio repair is preferred, but not required.

  • Nokia 7705 & 7750 SAR 8 network exp

  • Cienna & Nokia DWDM exp

  • OSP Fiber splicing exp

  • AC/DC Power Systems proficiency
