Omaha Public Power District Business Intelligence Analyst in Omaha, Nebraska


The Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst will be responsible for analyzing, reviewing, maintaining and applying data to BI solutions for electric utility business purposes as well as providing BI self-service support for business users including consulting and training. The Business Analyst will also work with business users and collaborate with peers, application and BI solution development teams as well as infrastructure, networking, cyber and IT support teams to deliver high-quality and innovative enterprise business intelligence solutions. This role will provide first level support for the company’s BI components. The Business Analyst will help to maintain a roadmap for BI technologies at OPPD and contribute to efforts that define BI Self-Service related standards and protocols. While maintaining an in-depth understanding of BI solutions and technologies, it is expected that you have a broad knowledge of the information technology field including but not limited to software development and cyber security.

BI Solution Development, Maintenance and Production Support:

  • Plan, develop, implement and maintain BI solutions such as reports, dashboards and other data visualizations

  • Ensure design of current and future BI solutions are aligned with the architectural direction

  • Participate in creating documentation of BI landscape components

  • Translate complex functional, non-functional and technical requirements into BI solution

  • Perform unit and integration testing to ensure that BI solution components perform according to requirements

  • Present BI solution overviews and results to business users

  • Contribute to continuous data quality improvements

  • Assist in developing governance processes around data assets

  • Adapt BI solutions to new requirements

  • Adhere to and support the continuous improvements of code management and DevOps processes

  • Provide production support and share on-call duties with team members

  • Collaborate with Infrastructure, Networking, Cyber Security, Application Delivery, Enterprise Architecture and Service Desk teams to ensure integrity, security, quality and availability of BI solution delivery

  • Explore and recommend emerging technologies and new data management methodologies to support/enhance BI landscape components

  • Ensure compliance with data management standards and software development standards as well as organization policies, department policies and industry regulations

    BI Self-Service Support and Consulting:

  • Provide statistical expertise, data analysis and BI solution design support to business users

  • Be and advocate for BI and help business users to adapt to and utilize the modernized BI landscape

  • Prepare and conduct training and workshops on BI tools/concepts and data utilization like data catalogue for business users

  • Provide frequent updates to business users on new BI platform features and enhancements to the Data Warehouse content

  • Collaborate with all Business Units to identify opportunities for BI system and service improvements

  • Support and help to continuously improve the BI Self-Service model

    Planning and Team Work Management: Play an active role in team work management for emerging and planned work items

  • Familiar with Agile Methodology

  • Actively participate in standup, sprint planning, backlog grooming, retrospective meetings

  • Provide high level and detailed estimates for work items

  • Decompose work items into epics, stories and tasks

  • Contribute to the grooming and prioritization process

  • Track and communicate on work progress

  • Collaborate with Product Owner, Scrum Master, Project Manager and team members to support the work management process



  • Bachelor’s degree in business, computer science, mathematics, engineering or technical area, or a combination of education and work experience that provides the necessary skills to perform the essential job functions

  • Three (3) years of experience in BI solution development with technical knowledge in the following disciplines: software engineering, data analysis, data visualization, data cleansing, meta data management, data quality management, database architecture, data integration, data processing and data warehousing

  • Proficient in dealing with business users; performing business requirements gathering, conducting BI solution support

  • Proficient in the design and deployments of enterprise reports, dashboards and data visualizations

  • Proficient in business model mapping and data visualization in IBM Cognos and Tableau

  • Proficient in relational database architectures and SQL standard languages T-SQL and PL/SQL

  • Experience with the design and tuning of complex database objects and SQL statements with Oracle or SQL Server

  • Experience with presenting BI solution overviews and recommendations

  • Proficient in data integrity and data governance concepts

  • Familiarity with Data Warehousing concepts and methodologies

  • Familiarity with Agile Principles, Agile methodology frameworks and Software Development Life Cycle

  • Familiarity with source control and code management

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent technical and professional communication skills both verbally and in writing

  • Must be able to work independently and effectively collaborate with minimum supervision

  • Must possess exceptional organizational skills, creative problem solving skills, and flexibility in changing priorities


  • Experience with analytical tools and concepts like R, Python, SAS, AI and Machine Learning

  • Experience with tabular and multidimensional queries like DAX and MDX

  • Familiar with Big Data and NoSQL technologies

  • Familiar with cloud-based data services like Data Lake Analytics and Stream Analysis

  • Working experience in the electric power utility industry

    Closing Statement

    Salary Grade: S4

    Minimum: $79,830

    Midpoint: $99,788
