Purpose

Responsible for providing primary technical guidance and support to the ongoing utility interconnection and high voltage design work currently underway on various renewable energy projects with the Business Development group at Algonquin.

Development & Construction Work Division

  • ‘Electrical Engineer’ have minor assignment to the Development team, with a planned allocation rate at 20% and primary assignment of 80% to the Construction team.

Development Work

  • Interconnection Applications – assist with preparation, submission and expediting 3 levels of interconnection studies – (i) feasibility studies, (ii) impact studies, and (iii) facilities studies.

  • Interconnection – Owner’s Engineer – assist with procuring consulting services for interconnection planning work – injection studies, congestion/curtailment studies.

  • Equipment Procurement – Technical Assistance - provide assistance to project team(s) compiling RFP’s and execution-ready equipment supply agreements; specifically technical specifications and Exhibits.

  • Balance of Plant Construction – Technical Assistance – provide assistance to project team(s) compiling RFP’s and execution-ready construction agreements; specifically technical specifications and Exhibits.

  • Due Diligence – for M&A project acquisition

  • Market Research & Surveying – assist with ‘origination’ work studying new balancing authorities, interconnection queue processes and activity levels, to assist with origination work on new projects, as well as existing Development projects.

Construction Work

  • Electrical Engineering – Submission Review – assist Project Engineers with the review of technical submissions from equipment suppliers/constructors.

  • SCADA System Design – assist Project Engineer(s) and project teams with development and execution of project SCADA solutions including voltage control, active power loops and primary frequency response.

  • Interconnection Project Management - Completing the interconnection process from execution of GIA to COD (telemetry & protection testing coordination, Market Participant registration, NERC, FERC, etc..) Basic Project Management of the tasks identified on the “Roadmap to COD”.

  • Commissioning Coordination - Writing owner’s commissioning plans, review of contractor’s testing and energization plans, OTO and LOTOs

  • RFI/NCR Resolution – assist Project Engineers with expediting and resolving ‘requests for information’ and ‘non-conforming reports’ to-and-from equipment suppliers and Balance of Plant constructors during ‘project construction’.

  • Operations Turnover – assist project team(s) with COD project ‘turnover’ elements; expediting ‘punch list’ items and deficiencies, warranty claim and turnover issues, spare parts procurement, etc.

Education & Experience

  • University degree in electrical engineering or equivalent education/industry experience.

  • Minimum 5 years progressive experience in power and controls, preferably in the power generation industry.

  • Candidates with direct experience/working knowledge in the following areas are preferred:

  • High voltage substation equipment: 12 kV to 345 kV,

  • Power generation: wind, solar, energy storage solutions

  • Controls and automation: PLC’s, SCADA, instrumentation, governors, excitation control,

  • Protection and control: protective relaying, device coordination, metering, and

  • Electrical testing.

  • Preference will be given to candidates who hold or are eligible to obtain an Ontario Professional Engineering license or other Canadian province equivalent
