Core Responsibilities

  • The Section Manager will be an effective problem solver with a commitment to understanding business challenges and designing meaningful solutions. The Section Manager will be responsible for the oversight, development, and implementation of a variety of legal technology and legal operations projects for the Law Department with a special focus on the CLOC core competencies for legal operations and as designated by the Law Department's Assistant General Counsel for Legal Innovation & Operations. These will be projects that meet the needs of the Law Department's diverse practice areas, enhance productivity, foster best practices, and support high performance. The Section Manager will implement policies, processes, and procedures to optimize the Department's legal operations to better serve the Company.

  • Work with the Assistant General Counsel to oversee and manage the Law Department's legal operations processes and systems, including the identification, implementation, training, and maintenance of enterprise legal management, document management, workflow technologies, and legal hold and eDiscovery management technologies. Work with stakeholders utilizing various Office365 technologies such as SharePoint, Forms, and Flow to facilitate and improve their processes. Assist in the oversight of the Caseworks system that the Energy & Environmental section uses to collect, organize, and submit information in connection with rate case and other regulatory discovery proceedings.

  • Develop, implement, and oversee short- and long-term plans for building and maintaining a high-quality, cost-effective legal operations program, with a special focus on technology, business processes, information resources, knowledge management, and other legal operations services designated by senior management of the Law Department.

  • Work on the annual capital budget and optimization process. Develop, manage, and oversee legal operations budgets including but not limited to forecasting and tracking of capital budgets.

  • Successfully oversee and manage day-to-day assignments and activities associated with the existing and planned technology initiatives and provide ongoing support and management of their integration into the Department's practices.

  • Collaborate and provide input on the Law Department legal technology roadmap to identify and prioritize ways to assist the department in moving forward.

  • Participate in the selection and successful implementation of Law Department technologies.

  • Create requests for proposals and procurement documents.

  • Direct supervision of LIO project specialists and system analyst.

  • Stay abreast of industry best practices for legal operations and the market for legal technology.

  • Collaborate with members of the department, various corporate Information Technology groups, and other organizations across the company.

  • Identification and tracking of key Law Department technology metrics.

  • Select, retain, and manage legal operations vendors.

  • Present to various audiences including colleagues, senior management and potentially the Public Service Commission regarding projects or requests for funding.

  • Respond to emergency situations involving Law Department technology, including any that may arise outside of normal working hours.

  • Provide other legal operations services designated by senior management of the Law Department.

  • Perform other tasks and assignments as assigned.

  • Assist the company during system emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment. This may require off-hour and weekend emergency response.

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 8 years of experience. or

  • Master's Degree and a minimum of 6 years of experience.

Relevant Work Experience

  • 5-7 years Experience in legal operations, managing special projects and legal technology initiatives in a large corporate, governmental, or comparable law department. Required

  • Strong interpersonal, writing and speaking skills as well as the ability to influence across groups, without direct oversight, to achieve results. Required

  • Experience with Project Management and Process Improvement Required

  • Organized, detail-oriented, and committed to continuous improvement. Required

  • Experience managing legal operations staff in a comparable corporate or governmental law department. Preferred

Licenses & Certifications

  • Driver's License Required

  • Other: Certification or degree in negotiations/contract administration. Preferred

Other Physical Demands

  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
